Let Sia's "Bird Set Free" Fly Into Your Ears

by Kristie Rohwedder

Buckle your seat belt, because the artist with an elastic heart has unleashed yet another crushing ballad: On Tuesday, goddess among mortals Sia released “Bird Set Free,” the newest single off of This is Acting (via Rolling Stone). “Is 'Bird Set Free' any good?” you ask. Uh, does “it’s a song by goddess among mortals Sia” answer your Q? The powerful, agile force that is the Australian singer’s voice soars and swoops all over the piano track, like a lark released from a cage. (Forgive me, but I couldn't resist the metaphor built into the song's title.)

Like previous This Is Acting single “Alive,” “Bird Set Free” was originally written for Adele. And like "Alive," "Bird Set Free" was co-written by Sia, Adele, and Tobias Jesso Jr. And like “Alive,” “Bird Set Free” is an exciting preview of what we can expect from Sia’s to-be-released seventh studio album. Both "Alive" and "Bird Set Free" have all but reduced me to a pile of dust, so I can only imagine what will happen the first time I listen to This is Acting. My guess: I will weep a lot and listen to it on repeat for days on end. I cannot wait for Jan. 29, 2016.

If “Bird Set Free” doesn’t do anything for you, I don’t even know what to say. Frankly, I am speechless. Luckily, I am not GIF-less. To anyone who isn't head over heels for "Bird Set Free," I say this:

This works, too:
