Her Boss Is Selling Everything To Save Her

by Krystin Arneson

In the most heartwarming news to come across our desks today, a Texas man is selling his 17-year-old restaurant to pay for his employee's medical bills after she was diagnosed with a brain tumor. The employee, 19 year-old Brittany Mathis, currently doesn't have healthcare, and her mother, who also works at the restaurant, is also uninsured. Right now for Mathis, even finding out whether the tumor is cancerous is out of the budget. And paternal assistance isn't available: Mathis' father passed away from an undiagnosed brain tumor in 2000.

That's when Mathis's boss, restauranteur Michael De Beyer, stepped in.

“It’s not right," De Beyer said. "Here’s a family, they really work hard; they have a lot of stuff against them in the past," he said. "They didn’t even ask anybody for help.”

De Beyer has had his restaurant on the market for a few years anyway, and believes it to be worth around $2 million. He said that this time (he's turned down a $1.3-million offer before), he'll accept a reserve price or minimum bid, and donate anything further to Mathis' care. He says he'll use his free time after the sale to spend more time with his family.

"I just can't be standing by and doing nothing. I have to try something because it's not right," De Beyer said.

De Beyer owns Kaiserhof restaurant and Wunderbar in Montgomery, Texas, if anyone's looking to get in on the German food business.
