9 Movies To Watch After A Breakup

Breakups are hard. It doesn't matter who broke up with whom, or who said what — if you're fresh off a breakup, it's normal to feel off your game. Of course, there are many different responses to a breakup. You can be sad, happy, relieved, hopeless — the list goes on. Luckily, no matter what emotion you're feeling, there's a movie for that. Not in the mood to see anyone, but too sad to be stuck with your own thoughts? A movie is just what you need. Films can help take your mind off of a breakup by making you embrace your tears, making you laugh, even just distracting you for a few hours. Here are nine movies all women should watch after a breakup, that'll certainly help with the post-romance blues.

Because as we all know, breakups are complicated. Sometimes after a breakup, you feel vengeful or angry — you might even plot out ways to ruin your ex's life. And, while I wouldn't advise you do that IRL, watching a movie where someone actually does, like John Tucker Must Die, might actually make you feel like you did. Want to sob about a true love lost? Try The Way We Were. Want to bury yourself in hot men to distract you? Magic Mike XXL is your movie. No matter what you're feeling, here are more movie remedies that can help you cure your breakup blues.

American Psycho (2000)

American Psycho, a movie starring Christian Bale as a maybe serial killer, might not be your traditional breakup movie. But it can be a nice reminder that even the perfect man could be a stone cold killer. There's better out there — yes, even if what you had was a Christian Bale equivalent.

Clueless (1995)

There is literally no life event that Clueless cannot improve. Clueless will never fail to make you laugh, and will remind you that, no matter what, you always have your friends (and your clothes) to keep you warm at night.

Mulan (1998)

Mulan is another one of those instant feel-good movies. Mulan is an inspiring, kickass lady, who rejects the idea that she needs a man to live her life. Plus, Eddie Murphy's Mushu is guaranteed to have you on the floor laughing.

Celeste & Jesse Forever (2012)

Don't watch Celeste & Jesse Forever if you're hoping to lose yourself in a fairy tale of true love. Celeste & Jesse Forever is a movie about a breakup. It's a bittersweet take on a couple (Rashida Jones and Andy Samberg) going through a divorce, but trying to remain friends. If you need a reality check to remind you that love can change, then this is your movie.

The Hunger Games (2012)

A lot of the talk about The Hunger Games revolves around the Peeta-Gale-Katniss love triangle, but make no mistake, the first Hunger Games movie is about one young woman's brave fight for survival. It's super feminist and is full of action to take your mind off any romantic notion.

Under The Tuscan Sun (2003)

Because who hasn't dreamed of starting over in Italy after a breakup? As cliché as it is, sometimes an ending just means another beginning.

Harry Potter Marathon

What better way to take your mind off your stressful love life than the magical wizarding world? A Harry Potter marathon, complete with snacks and friends, should be enough to help you relax and have fun!

Love & Basketball (2000)

Yes, Love & Basketball is a love story, but it's one that spans over a decade, proving that there can be a lifetime of ups and downs for true love to find its way.

Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle (2004)

Harold & Kumar = pure escapist fun. It might not help you find new perspective on your breakup, but it will definitely let you stop thinking for a few hours.

There you have it, nine movies to watch in a breakup. In case you're not satisfied, there are plenty of movies out there that can provide some comfort. However, I must warn you that there are a few movies one should never watch after a breakup. Listed here are some of films from the DO NOT WATCH list: The Way We Were (1973), The Notebook

(2004), and Wall-E (2008). You've been warned.
