Britney Spears' New Album Is On The Way

by Alex Kritselis

All of our pop music dreams are coming true: Britney Spears' new album — affectionately dubbed "B9" by her fans (it's her ninth effort) — is on the way. On Tuesday, Spears got the Internet buzzing after she posted a picture of herself on Twitter goofing around in the studio with songwriters Justin Tranter and Julia Michaels. The tweet reads, "Working hard and hardly working...new album...wheeeee!" If you weren't already aware, Tranter and Michaels have quickly become one of the industry's most sought-after songwriting teams. The two are responsible for co-penning Selena Gomez's smash hit "Good For You" (as well as five more songs on her latest LP, Revival) and Pitch Perfect 2 star Hailee Steinfeld's catchy debut single, "Love Myself." It's great to see that Spears has brought in some fresh talent for B9! But, that's not the only exciting recent development...

Last Thursday, Spears tweeted that she'd just finished laying down vocals for a new track. "LOVE this song," the 33-year-old artist wrote. "It makes ME smile, and I hope it will make you smile too... #B9." Ohhh! And, as if that wasn't enough to get your Spears-lovin' heart racing, on Fri., Oct. 9, the "Perfume" singer shared another studio pic on Instagram, this time with up-and-coming British DJ/producer Burns (Ellie Goulding, Pitbull, Kelis).

That same day, Burns also shared a photo with Spears. He wrote that they had made "fire" in the studio together.

So, when might we get to hear Spears' new material? It's difficult to say. The Princess of Pop is currently in the middle of her wildly successful Las Vegas residency (which she just extended for another two years), so finding time to record her next project is probably tough — and she doesn't seem to be in any rush. Back in March, Spears told Billboard that she was "slowly but surely" working on a new album, but noted that it wasn't her "full priority." Sadly, a 2015 premiere for B9 is seeming less and less likely.

However, all hope is not lost. Spears' manager, Larry Rudolph, told Billboard in March that the "Till the World Ends" hit-maker is currently focusing on releasing "a few great singles as they come," because "[a]lbums just aren't as important in the digital age as they used to be." So far, Spears has only put out one new single: "Pretty Girls" with Iggy Azalea. So, unless her plans have changed, it seems possible that she could treat fans to a couple of new tunes before the arrival of B9.

And, seeing as how she's been in the studio quite a bit lately, I wouldn't be surprised if Spears had something ready to go soon. Stay tuned for more details.
