Feminists Share What Defines Them & What Doesn't

In a new BuzzFeed video titled “I’m a Feminist, But I’m Not…,” feminists explain what their feminism means, and what it doesn’t. Feminists face a lot of misguided stereotypes about who they are as people, from “You must hate men!” to “You must not shave your armpits!” Many people assume that feminists must dress certain ways, act certain ways, have certain backgrounds, and do certain things, but, as the participants in this video point out, feminists are a diverse group — they come from all walks of life, they have different cultural and religious backgrounds, they don’t all look the same, and they aren’t all women. What they do have in common is something very simple: They believe in the “political, economic, and social equality of the sexes.” (That happens to be the Merriam Webster definition of “feminism.”) They believe that men and women deserve equal rights and equal opportunities. That’s it. Seems simple enough, right?

The video’s participants proclaim who they are in ways that range from the serious (“I’m a feminist, and I’ll speak my mind”) to the hilarious (“I’m a feminist and f*ck Donald Trump”). The video is a good reminder that feminists come in all forms, and we shouldn’t let stereotypes define who we are or how we express ourselves.
