Zoe Saldana's Exciting New Role

by Alanna Bennett

In cool casting news of the day, Zoe Saldana's officially starring in that Rosemary's Baby remake that NBC's working on. She's playing — you guessed it — Rosemary, and it already got our ears perked. Mia Farrow, who played the role in the original 1968 Roman Polanski film, and has figuratively owned that role for years. She is, of course, a woman of blonde hair and blue eyes. Zoe Saldana is not.

Not that Farrow and Saldana have nothing in common — Saldana's actually got a lot physically in common with Farrow: A similar general face shape, the same waifish look and energy, killer cheekbones, the same slight figure.

Rosemary's Baby centers around Rosemary Woodhouse and her mysterious pregnancy. Here's the IMDb logline:

A young couple move into a new apartment, only to be surrounded by peculiar neighbors and occurrences. When the wife becomes mysteriously pregnant, paranoia over the safety of her unborn child begins controlling her life.

Spoiler alert: There's a devil baby, and everyone around her is super sketch.

And here's what Quinn Taylor, NBC's head of longform entertainment, said of Saldana herself:

Zoe has proven that she is one of our most gifted actresses, and we think she has the perfect combination of spirit and gravitas to take on the title role from Ira Levin’s infamous novel.

Given 1) the classic status of the original film, 2) the casting of a (badass) not-white actress to play the lead, and 3) that this movie was originally directed by disgraced director Roman Polanski, this might be a production to watch. Mia Farrow's also likely to tweet something adorable about it.
