Find Out What Kind of Emails Lena Dunham Sends

by Maitri Suhas

Performance artist Miranda July, who is known for her interactive works, will send you celebrity emails from July to November. The project, called "We Think Alone," is a curation of emails previously sent from stars lik Lena Dunham, Catherine Opie, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Kirsten Dunst, Sheila Heti, Etgar Keret, Kate and Laura Mulleavy, Lee Smolin and Danh Vo. The stars agreed to choose personal messages that July will send to anyone who simply signs up here.

The selection of the emails offers a look into the self-awareness of these celebrities. July came up with 10 topics that the selected emails should fit into, the first being money. Lena Dunham responded with an email about how a $24,000 couch was too expensive. (With a smiley face emoticon afterwards. Bizarre.)

Emails are both intimate and incredibly banal; I'm sure these celebrities send hundreds of emails a day. So it's great to see which messages they chose to offer a glimpse of themselves, making for rare self-portraits of people whose images are constantly fluid and skewed by the media. Why did Lena Dunham think we needed to know that a $24,000 couch was out of her price range? To connect with the common man? We'll never know because the emails come without comment, but it's cool to think about them scrolling through their sent folders with some degree of self-consciousness. Maybe celebrities are human(ish) after all.
