Hudson's PCA Speech Will Make You Cry

by Lia Beck

An awards show that's not exactly know for tears got an emotional moment last night when Jennifer Hudson and her sister Julia accepted for "Favorite Humanitarian" at the People's Choice Awards. Jennifer Hudson was chosen for the award because of her work with the Julian D. King Foundation which she formed with her sister after their horrible family tragedy six years ago.

In 2008, Julia's estranged husband, William Balfour murdered Julia's seven-year-old son Julian King (after whom the foundation is named), the Hudsons' mother, Darnell Donerson, and their brother, Jason Hudson. The sisters started the foundation in their honor to "provide stability, support and positive experiences for children of all backgrounds to help enable them to grow to be productive, confident and happy adults," according to their website.

At the award ceremony, Jennifer Hudson was already crying when she was called up to accept her award. Jennifer brought Julia to the stage with her saying, "I had to bring my sister up here because it's a team effort." The sisters gave their emotional acceptance speech together.

Jennifer spoke about how the award means so much because she knows the influence the foundation has on young people back in her hometown of Chicago. The singer said, "It's one thing to be a celebrity and have power, it's only so much we can have, but it means nothing if we're not making a difference with helping someone else and trying to change a life." She continued, "It also feels good to see positivity acknowledged. Where we come from all you hear about it who shot who, who went to jail ... We want to show them, I came from the same area as you and if I can do it, you can do it too."

Julia added, "We help the people and for people to give this award to my sister and, I guess, I, it shows that we are making a difference."
