Here's The Most Popular Girl's Name In The World

by Brianna Wiest

Whether you're dreaming of baby names that will make your kid fit in on the playground, are trying to avoid anything too #normcore, or are just interested in what the overall population seems to be digging at any given moment in time, Laura Wattenberg has your back. She recently collected baby name statistics from 49 countries around the world, and the results are in: The most popular name for a female baby is "Sophia" (or Sofia, Sofie, Zsófia, etc.), ranking first in nine countries, second or third in 20 others, and within the top 25 in 2/3 of countries altogether. The name isn't partial to just one country, language or culture, either — it tops the charts in both in Christian and Muslim countries, and in countries that speak up to 22 different languages.

Something important to note, however, is that big countries such as India and China actually don't report baby names, so Laura couldn't have taken their statistics into consideration. This is to say: it's the most popular name in the countries that are surveyed, and that we know of. (We imagine that the results would be a bit different if every single nation were included). Wattenberg herself writes that she's unsure of why the world loves the name so much, but it's probably something to do with the soft-sounding syllables and overall approachability. "It just blew me away that so many different languages and cultures would arrive at the same sound at the same time," Wattenberg told Live Science in an interview. "I guess that really says something about the way culture is transmitted today." Indeed.

What's interesting, however, is that despite Sophia being the most popular girls name right now, it's far from the most popular name in Hollywood! To prove it, we compiled the six most famous Sophias – we're assuming there will be more to come!

Known best for her sassy tongue and role in Modern Family, Vergara is the most popular Sophia in Hollywood nowadays, but she stole the reign from the former queen...

Sophia Loren

The Italian-born actress has become a bonafide old Hollywood sex symbol — her name is equatable to that of Marilyn Monroe or Audrey Hepburn, and that's no small claim to make. We're thinking Loren could be responsible for a lot of name's popularity, but we'll never really know.

The One Tree Hill star may have risen to popularity in the 2000s, but her name, it seems, is living on far beyond her days getting cozy with Chad Michael Murray.

You know her as the little girl who could rapped with Nicki Minaj on Ellen, and with recording contracts (and a plethora of adorable tutus) on her own accord. She has the name, the pipes, the personality and the style to be the next great Sophia, don't you agree?

The ex-girlfriend of 1D's Liam Payne is yet another famous Sophia on the rise. It was only a day ago that she made her formerly private Instagram public, and delivered us all the creeping goods we've been dying for. Who knows what she'll do in the wake of her post-Liam popularity.

Sophia starred in the 2006 heartbreak drama Tristan & Isolde and Transformers back in 2014, among many others. (She was also in Mansfield Park in 1999, which is to say that like the other Sophias in the ranks, she's definitely got some range).
