Claire McCaskill Tells Men To "Shut Up" — VIDEO

by Lauren Holter

In a public service announcement aired on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert Monday night, Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill had a brilliantly snarky message for men — "just shut the hell up." If this had been a live performance and not a video, McCaskill surely would have gotten a standing ovation from the women in the audience. As one of only 20 female senators, McCaskill said she wants to encourage more American women to run for office, but at the same time, she wants men to stop sharing their opinions about everything. Guess what men, we don't need to know every thought that pops into your heads.

McCaskill made it clear that she's not asking men to be completely silent, but simply to keep their opinions about certain issues to themselves. "It's not that women don't value your thoughts, it's just that we don't value all of them. The world doesn't need your opinion on everything," McCaskill said in the video. "For example, what women do with their bodies. Hush. Who the next James Bond should be. Zip it." This doesn't only pertain to her male colleagues in the Senate, it applies to men everywhere. Just shut up!

Here's a list of everything McCaskill said women no longer need to hear men's opinions on:

  • Star Wars
  • Pantsuits
  • Selfies
  • Shonda Rhimes
  • Curtains
  • Carbs
  • Millennials
  • Body-hair removal
  • Religion
  • Gluten
  • Harry Potter
  • Nut allergies
  • Star Wars again
  • All art in general
  • Whether to brine the Thanksgiving turkey
  • Ethics in gaming journalism

McCaskill's definitely sick of hearing about Star Wars — it must be a common topic of discussion in the Senate. "If you could control yourselves and hold back from further expressing your opinions on any of these topics, we'll let you keep weighing in on marijuana legalization," McCaskill added with a slight smile. "But that's a huge, big if." Get it girl.

She mentioned women's bodies, but I think it's worth adding a few specifics to the list of subjects we don't need men's opinions on.

  • Birth control
  • Abortion
  • Pregnancy
  • Boobs
  • Catcalling

Though it was intended to be funny, McCaskill's video hit on an important issue for many feminists — men's opinions mattering more than women's. In the Senate, women's voices are simply outnumbered, so McCaskill's frustration is understandable. Sorry men, but we don't need or want to hear your thoughts on every little thing, so please take McCaskill's advice pronto. Check out the PSA below.
