Instagram Just Got Hauter With Alber Elbaz

by Renata Certo-Ware

Instagram and fashion are already inextricably entwined — seriously, every designer, blogger, editor, and model has already mastered the 'gram. But the social media app just got a whole lot chicer. Fashion's most huggable designer, Alber Elbaz, joined Instagram on Thursday, posting his very first photo to the app, which was, of course a selfie. In it, Elbaz is situated in the bottom right corner of the pic, beneath a huge pop-art rendition of red lips. He's sporting, of course, his trademark black-rimmed glasses and a big, red bow tie.

In the few hours since he joined, he has already racked up over 12k followers and counting. In true Insta-famous form, his proportions game is on fleek: He's only following 25 ppl, including Instagram's own Eva Chen, model Jamie Bochert, and Pharrell.

Elbaz's timing in joining Instagram actually feels oh-so-right given his recent departure from the house of Lanvin, where he served as artistic director since 2001. It's time for a fresh start for the designer!

Seems like he's going to do more on his Instagram account that just instilling FOMO, though. His first post came with a long, emoji-packed caption explaining his journey to joining the app. He adorably signed off with a glasses emoji, but he's still learning the ins and outs — he (also adorably) tagged himself in the caption. Oops!

This is really his first dalliance with social media — he doesn't have a public Facebook, Twitter, or Snapchat account. While he was initially wary of the app as merely a place to show off food and "photogenic" friends, it seems he's had a change of heart.

This [sic] past 2 wks made me realize how many AMAZING friends+supporters 👫👬👭 I have....And YES,they are all 'photogenic'...because they are all BEAUTIFUL 'inside-out'. 🌹🌹🌹 Instagram is a beautiful way to communicate+share L❤️VE. I L❤️VE YOU ALL BACK 💋

I wonder if Elbaz's friend Eva Chen, who is now the Head of Fashion Partnerships there at Instagram, had anything to do with the designer's change of heart? In any case, she took to the app today to share her enthusiasm for his addition to the network, and encouraged her followers to follow Elbaz:

His account is still only hours old, but I'm already anticipating some amazingness in store from the Moroccan-Israeli designer.

Here's what I bet my bottom bowtie he'll be posting about on his account.

1. His Famous & Well-Appointed Squad

When you roll with the likes of Karl Lagerfeld, Meryl Streep, and Suzy Menkes, there are sure to be lots of photographable moments, like this hug with Lagerfeld.

And a photo-op with Emma Stone is surely shareable.

He and Streep clearly have a lot of fun together. He can tag her — if she finally decides to get an Instagram account, too.

Elbaz and pal Suzy Menkes are both in possession of two of the industry's most iconic accouterments: those glasses and that hair flip.

He and Anna Dello Russo rocking matching head-to-toe black would make for a great post.

And a pic with Natalia Vodianova is sure to rack up a lot of likes.

2. Strong Accessories Game

He may have finally embraced tech, in the form of social media, but not many people could make a vintage cooling device look this good. This would make a great Instagram video — I'm envisioning an Eva Chen-directed short film in slow motion set to the tune of "Classic Man" by Jidenna.

3. Bow Tie Close-Ups

Elbaz is rarely ever spotted without a bow tie — that is, unless he's wearing a neck sash or something similar. I bet there will be plenty of pics where his bow ties are on full display. Let's see, there's the blue velvet one paired with black, goggle-like glasses.

And a cumin-colored bow tie, with the same tortoise shell glasses.

Back to the black goggle-glasses, this time with a pink bow tie.

4. Dramatic Lighting

You don't think Elbaz is going to rely on filters, do you? He seems to be followed by the perfect cathedral lighting everywhere he goes, and that will definitely come through in his future Instagram posts.

5. A Rare Glasses and Bow-Tie Free Selfie

Elbaz, is that you?!?
