The Secret Behind Ariana Grande's Ah-Mazing Lashes

by Alexa Tucker

The benefit of Ariana Grande's signature half-up pony hairstyle? Her consistently strong beauty game is always on full display. Classic cat-eye, baby smooth skin, and perfect pout aside, Ariana Grande's eyelashes are truly something to marvel at. Her makeup artist, Daniel Chinchilla, spoke with Byrdie to share the secrets behind her full, flirty lash look, and the best part? It's totally DIY-able with the right tools and tips.

Running a mascara wand through your lashes does an amazing job of opening up your eyes and enhancing your facial features — plus, full lashes can give you a major confidence boost. Nothing wrong with that, right? But not all eye makeup routines are created equal, and there are a few user-friendly hacks you can use that'll help your lashes pack even more of a punch.

The first step: Be savvy with your eyelash curler. Instead of looking straight ahead when you curl your lashes, look down, says Chinchilla (so you don't pinch your eyelid. You know the struggle — it is real and painful). Need to get your hands on a lash curler in the first place? He recommends going with a Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler or the Kevyn Aucoin Beauty Eyelash Curler.

After you've curled your lashes the first time, apply a light mascara — you're going to grab that curler again, so choosing the right formula helps prevent clumping, says Chinchilla (he likes the classic Maybelline Great Lash for this step.) Follow up with another go with the lash curler, then apply a heavier, more volumizing mascara, like MAC Haute and Naughty, which he says he uses on Grande often to get that signature full lash look she loves.

Make sure you've done most of your curling before the second coat, though — “You want to make sure the lashes are really curled before building volume," he says.

As for fans of falsies? When you're using strip lashes, choose natural, wispy lashes — they're more flexible and easier to put on than their thick, voluminous counterparts. You can even layer two on top of each other, says Chinchilla. What a concept!

To make application simpler, first cut them down to your lash size and length, trimming from the outside so you preserve the "flare effect." Then, Chinchilla recommends cutting the measured-out lash in half, and putting on the outer portion first (you might not even need the second half.) "It’s all about customizing the lash strip for your own eye," he told Byrdie. "The biggest problem women have is trying to apply a lash that doesn’t fit their eye."

Another tip: After you apply the glue to the strip (Chinchilla uses Duo Eyelash Adhesive), wait 20 seconds so it gets tacky before you put it on.

And if you've got super straight lashes, you might want to give individual false lashes a shot — yeah, I know, they're super annoying, but Chinchilla says adding a couple to the outer corners of your eyes can work wonders in giving you some curl. (He also likes the KISS cluster lashes to add just to the outer corners, too.)

To insanely long.

The lash envy is so real — but you can bet I'll be testing out these tips to ease the jealousy.
