Katie Holmes' New Role Is So Intense

by Maggie Malach

Although it's been almost two decades since Katie Holmes first starred as Joey Potter on Dawson's Creek, she's never quite shaken that girl next door image. However, prepare to see the actress in a completely new light, courtesy of her latest project. The first trailer for Touched with Fire just dropped and it's very intense.

According to the trailer's description, Holmes and Luke Kirby star as "Two manic depressives [who] meet in a psychiatric hospital and begin a romance that brings out all of the beauty and horror of their condition." In just two minutes, the trailer gives viewers a look at some of the ups and downs of the relationship, while also showing a new side of Holmes. Not only did the movie garner rave reviews (as seen in the trailer), but it looks like a fascinating and unique plot.

The role seems perfect for Holmes, who has stepped out of the spotlight as of late. While she's had roles on Ray Donovan and How I Met Your Mother, this seems like the first major part she's played in quite some time. And while it's definitely against type, that's one reason it's so perfect for her.

Holmes' good girl image is great for some roles, but her edgier moments like Pieces of April and Disturbing Behavior often go forgotten. In other words, she's returning to her roots, in a way, while also bringing her acting talent back into the forefront. Most recently, Holmes has spent a lot of time raising her daughter and in the fashion spotlight, but if she's looking to reboot her acting career in a big way, this is totally the means to do it.

You can watch the Touched with Fire trailer above. According to Deadline, it will hopefully be slated for an early 2016 release.
