7 Makeup Mistakes We All Made As Teenagers

by Miki Hayes

If you've ever stopped to think about how far you've come in doing your own makeup, you might have realized just how many makeup mistakes we all made as teenagers. Don't get me wrong, it's great to experiment and play with makeup at any age. And because it's a form of art and self expression, there aren't really any rules when it comes to doing your makeup. However, just because there aren't rules doesn't mean we can't make mistakes. And by golly, we've made some cringe-worthy ones. If your eyebrows are still growing back, you know what I mean.

But just because our middle-school photos maybe weren't some of our best looks doesn't mean we can't laugh at ourselves now. After all, it was kind of a widespread problem. I know I wasn't the only one who thought it was a good idea to essentially bathe in glitter on the daily. So now that we've lived and learned about the importance of moderation and blending, let's take a walk down memory lane, and have a chuckle at these seven makeup mistakes that we have all made— whether we're willing to admit it or not.

1. Over-Tweezing Eyebrows

Why, oh why did we think that the thinner the brow, the better? Don't get me wrong: There's no shame in having thin brows. But over-plucking to the point where we could fill in our brows by essentially drawing lines across our foreheads? Not cute.

2. Too Much Black Eyeliner

How many pencils of black eyeliner did you go through each month? A lot of kohl went into those panda eyes that we were all so proud of. At least we finally learned the secrets to tasteful eyeliner application.

3. Glitter Everywhere

Seriously. Glitter eyeshadow, blush, and lipgloss were everything. But of course we also had to have those squeezy tubes of glitter goo to apply on top of our makeup and even all over our bodies. At least if you still worship glitter, you now use it selectively because you've learned the power of moderation.

4. Intense Lip Liner

Matching lip liner to lipstick, or at least choosing a complimentary shade seems so simple now. But when we were teenagers? A dark brown lip liner with a nude lipstick seemed like the obvious choice. Why? I'll never know.

5. Metallic/Bright Everything

There's nothing wrong with a metallic, blue eye or a frosted, Barbie-pink lip. But why did we always feel the two should go together? At least now we know that if we're going to pair a bold eye with a bold lip, not everything needs to be offensively bright and/or frosted.

6. Overloading Self-Tanner

Remember splotchy, orange hands? Back in the day before we learned about tanning mitts, properly blending in product, and moderation? We always tried to go about 20 shades darker at once and ended up looking like streaky Oompa Loompas. Not a good look.

7. Not Blending Anything

Whether it was the harsh edges of foundation around our jawlines; the hot pink blush we slapped on our cheeks; or the eyeshadow we applied with those useless, sponge-tip applicators; one critical thing we always seemed to forget to do was blend. Not that we looked like clowns, as my dramatics are making the situation seem, but we could've done better. At least we finally learned to blend foundation down to the neck, blend blush back towards our ears, and blend out harsh eyeshadow in the crease.

But really guys, we've come a long way, and I'm proud of us for no longer relying on glitter as an everyday staple in our makeup routines.
