5 Up And Coming Young Female Artists

by Jessica Learish

Art is everywhere — from murals painted on the sides of buildings under the cover of night to the pictures we scroll past on Instagram during our lunch break. These five up and coming young female artists are just getting started as they make their mark on the canvas of our minds — and if they aren't on your radar, they totally should be. After all, the scope of possibility for art that has not yet been made extends outward in every direction, too far for the human imagination to comprehend, much like the universe. And just like with space exploration, there are young people who are called to explore that scope and create things that no one ever has before.

Georgia O'Keeffe said, "I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn't say any other way — things I had no words for." So, if visual art is, at its core, another language that transcends the limitations of words and speaks across continents and cultures, isn't it important, now more than ever, that we pay attention to these voices and learn what we can from them?

Here are five such voices that you may not have heard of just yet that are shouting their way into wider awareness, paintbrush, pencil, or graphic tablet in-hand.

1. Melissa Arendt

Melissa Arendt is a painter, illustrator, and graphic designer out of Sacramento, California. She enjoys forcing disparate visual elements together to make something new out of the pieces, to stunning effect.

2. Alyson Provax

Alyson Provax is a Portland-based printmaker who enjoys the small changes in objects over time. Her diagram series explores phases of everything from microscopic organisms to the moon, as seen here.

3. Britt Bass Turner

Britt Bass Turner is an abstract artist from Roswell, Georgia. She enjoys creating visual surprises in her work, and reportedly has a very cute puppy.

4. Jen Wink

Jen Wink graduated from Barnard College, and now lives in Philadelphia with her partner and kids. She explains that contrast is a big inspiration for her work, citing "dynamic tension between man and nature, between science and art" as a muse.

5. Jessica Simorte

Jessica Simorte is a Texas-based painter who explores abstract interpretations of interior spaces and designs. Catch one of her occasional solo exhibits in Kansas City or Dallas.
