Do these First Names Mean You're Wife Material?

by Elizabeth Nolan Brown

What's in a name? Well, your likelihood of being a perceived as a good spouse by strangers, for one. According to a completely unscientific study conducted by UK web-hosting company Siteopia, some people think that certain names signify people are better husband or wife-material.

So what's on the list, you ask? Because no matter how stupid this idea is, admit it: You want to know if you (or your significant other) rank. According to 2,000 random strangers, the women who make the best wives are named:

  1. Katie
  2. Sophie
  3. Louise
  4. Sarah
  5. Emily
  6. Charlotte
  7. Elizabeth
  8. Amy
  9. Jessica
  10. Lucy

Runners up included Emma, Gemma, Ellie, Nicole, and Grace. Men who make the best husbands are named:

  1. David
  2. Andrew
  3. Daniel
  4. Paul
  5. John
  6. William
  7. Simon
  8. James
  9. Chris
  10. Stephen

Best husband runners-up were Mark, Rob, and Pete.

"Where's the imagination, people?" The Cut asks. "I bet a Vesta or a Wolf could also provide a loving, supportive, long-term partnership that would blossom into old age." That may be, but Siteopia asked people to judge names based on the people in their own lives and most people don't have a husband, high-school boyfriend, or uncle named Wolf. What they do have is Davids. Jessicas. Johns. Emilys. Katies.

But despite the silliness of this survey, there may be a viable takeaway: "Every time we hear mention of a name we naturally associate particular values or impressions based on our past experiences," a Siteopia spokesman told the Telegraph. "It seems certain names tend to crop up more than others when thinking about the qualities of a good husband or wife." Sorry, Delilah.
