Every 90s Girl Had These In Her Purse

by May Sofi

If you were to dig through my purse today, you would probably find an array of nude-colored MAC lipsticks, some scattered metro cards, and perhaps a pair of pretty earphones — and that purse would be Marc Jacobs. If you were to do the same thing nearly 2 decades ago, the inside of my Kate Spade bag would look a whole lot different. That's because there were certain signature 90s beauty products and accessories that no girl growing up in the 90s would be caught dead without, and they didn't include the typical Starbucks coffee receipts of today's world.

Zillions of must-have items filled our shiny plastic purses back in the day, like those infamous butterfly clips made popular by Mary Kate & Ashley Olsen, and that bold brown lipliner that Rachel from Friends wore all the time. You can't blame our childhood selves for trying to mimic the style of our favorite 90s icons like Full House's DJ Tanner, and Topanga from Boy Meets World, which is why we carried bright-colored scrunchies and a pack of sparkly lip gloss pretty much everywhere we went.

Thinking back on the days of neon chokers, bandana headbands, and frosted lip products, I often wonder — what in the world was I thinking?! Still, I can't help but smile when reminiscing about trends of the past. Let's take a trip down memory lane and look at 7 quintessential items that every 90s girl carried in her purse.

1. Butterfly Clips

I always had at least a handful of these colorful bad boys at the bottom of my purse.

2. Flavored Lip Smackers

Bonne Bell Lip Smackers, $12, amazon.com

Watermelon was my favorite flavor.

3. Sparkly Tube Gloss

Juicy Tubes Ultra Shiny Lip Gloss, $18, lancome.com

Because we needed something sparkly to layer over our lip smackers.

4. Tattoo Choker

If we weren't already wearing one of these, we had an extra in our purse, just in case.

5. Walkman

Sony D-EJ360 PSYC CD Walkman, $40, amazon.com

Before we had iPhones to play our favorite jams, we carried around a walkman filled with the latest Britney Spears and Backstreet Boys CDs.

6. Bath & Body Works Cucumber Melon Lotion

Cucumber Melon Body Lotion, $12.50, bathandbodyworks.com

If there was one signature scent for all of the 90s, it was this one.

7. Scrunchie

Shiny Peach Cheetah Nylon Tricot Scrunchie, $6, americanapparel.com

A fun printed scrunchie was an absolute must, and we also carried an extra in our purse.

I totally miss the 90s.
