Is Jay Ready To Be The Flash Again?

by Rachel Paige

Jay Garrick has been MIA for the last few Flash episodes. He's got a reason: he doesn't want to be The Flash anymore. When he arrived on Earth One, he arrived powerless and has been less than enthusiastic about getting the Speed Force back. Sure, he's helped Barry Allen out along the way — like with that cool lightning bolt thing — but he appears more than happy to hang up his cool hat and stop running for good. That is, until his help is needed and Jay actually gets his powers back for a little while. It's short lived, and afterward he vows to never get regain this power again.

For starters, I'm still not entirely convinced that Jay doesn't still have the Speed Force in him. This is partly becasue I believe that he's actually Zoom, but this is a story for another day. For all we know on the show, he is currently not a speedster. He walked away from all of that after Harry Wells showed back up at S.T.A.R. Labs, and is rather peeved when he's called in for help.

Harry has developed a new super speed serum, Velocity-6, in hopes of giving Barry a little boost when it comes time to fight Zoom again (and Velocity-6 sounds a lot like Velocity-9 from the comics). Harry wants to tests it out on Jay. Jay flat out refuses, and storms out of S.T.A.R. Labs. And then Patty has to come into the picture, and mess everything up by shooting Wells in the chest, thinking he's a bad guy (well, he kinda is. But Patty, come on).

The only one who can get the bullet out of Wells' chest is Jay, and Caitlin begs him to help. He injects himself with Velocity-6, and we see the lightning flash in his eyes (literally). Jay then pulls the bullet out of Wells' chest like it's all in a day's work.

Later he claims ("claims") that the drug has worn off and he no longer has any superspeed. But oh really, Jay? It just wears off in a snap? Honestly, I'm not buying it. I really don't think Harry and Caitlin would create something so weak that it wears off so quickly. I also, from the comics, I'm willing to wager that this Velocity-6 hangs around in Jay for a little while longer. It might also have some lasting effects. It's a drug, after all. Jay might find himself craving more of it.

This is not the last we've seen of this Velocity-6. Once Harry gets back up on his feet, he and Caitlin are going to keep working on it. It'll be back faster than you can say, "I bet Jay Garrick is Zoom!"
