These States Had The Most Mass Shootings In 2015

by Lauren Holter

On Friday, three people were killed and nine others were injured at a Planned Parenthood in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Though the suspect's motive is still undetermined, Attorney General Loretta Lynch called the shooting a "crime against women," considering how it took place at a reproductive health center. This was the second mass shooting in the central Colorado town this year, and the fourth in the state as a whole. Despite the seemingly high amount of violent incidents, Colorado is not one of the states with the most mass shootings in 2015.

So far this year, there have been a total of 350 mass shootings (incidents in which four or more people were killed or injured) across the country. That's a shockingly high number, and it will likely rise before the end of the year. There are so many shootings that many go unrecognized in the national media, making it difficult for Americans to fully grasp how prevalent they are these days.

While there has been at least one mass shooting in most states, 34 percent of them have occurred in only five states, all of which have experienced more than 20 incidents in 2015. Here are the states that have suffered the most mass shootings this year.

There have been 27 mass shootings in Florida in 2015 ― many of which didn't have any fatalities, only multiple people wounded. The worst incident killed four and wounded one in Jacksonville earlier this month. The police said it was a murder-suicide, and two five-month-old twins were among those killed.

2. Illinois

Illinois has had a total of 25 mass shootings this year, with 14 taking place in Chicago. The most recent incident left four people wounded Nov. 22, in what the police said appeared to be a gang-related shooting.
