The One Product You Need To Battle Dry Skin

by Jessica Willingham

Winter can be so cruel to our skin. Sure, it can be mild — causing itching and irritation — but oftentimes, it can cause your skin to flake, peel, and even bleed. If you want to keep your skin younger looking and definitely healthier, here's the one product to combat dry skin this winter: facial or body oil.

Keeping your skin healthy is a dual effort, both internally with what you eat and drink, and externally with the products you use (or if you use any at all). You can internally combat harsh, dry skin by eating foods with lots of omega-3 fatty acids, like fish, nuts, and avocado (like you needed another excuse, amirite?). Oh, and yes — drinking lots and lots of water will help your skin stay glowy all winter long, too. Externally, you can be protect your skin by covering up when going out in harsh weather, as well as moisturizing using products that don't have alcohol in them, like highly concentrated, alcohol-free facial and body oils.

Makeup remover, hand sanitizer, and a host of other beauty and skin products actually contain alcohol, which is a big problem if you have dry skin. You want to stay away from any alcohol-based products with ingredients like SD alcohol, ethanol, denatured, isopropyl, methanol or ethyl alcohol. Pro tip: Check to see how high alcohol is on the list of ingredients — if it's one of the first three, skip it! Why, you ask? Alcohol evaporates quickly, but the damage is lasting. It can sometimes strip your skin of its protective layer and leave it more vulnerable to harsh conditions like cold, wind, and the drying heat of the indoors.

Instead, go for nourishing ingredients like vitamin A, which improves skin's elasticity and tone, and vitamin E, which increases moisture in the epidermis, resulting in softer, smoother, and more supple skin. So, what's my go-to moisturizer for everything from my cuticles to my entire body? The one product you need to use this winter to combat dry skin is Bio Oil. It's a heavily moisturizing blend of plant and essential oils, and even Kim Kardashian and Khloe Kardashian are huge fans of the stuff.

Bio Oil, $22, Amazon

This stuff is amazing for not only moisturizing your skin, but also for treating acne scars and stretchies (aka stretch marks). Overall, it's a healing, alcohol-free moisturizer that will replenish your skin instead of stripping it dry. I apply it every night after getting out of the shower (remember — water can be drying as well!) and it works wonders. If you really want to improve your dry, winter skin, then be sure to use alcohol-free moisturizers and products.
