Hilary's Returning to TV! But That Channel... Oof

by Lia Beck

Hilary Duff might be moving through life too quickly. First she got married at age 22, then she had a kid at 24, then last week we found out she was getting divorced at 26. Okay, there's really nothing wrong with any of that, but the newest report about Duff might really make you want pump the breaks on her behalf. Hilary Duff is headed back to television on a new show for TV Land. The channel that replays The Andy Griffith Show and whose new programming stars actresses like Kirstie Alley and Betty White, is planning a new show which will co-star Hilary Duff. The concept of the show involves someone lying about their age, but Duff probably can't pass as 60-plus so I don't know what they're thinking.

The new show is called Younger and will star Sutton Foster (Bunheads and, more importantly, Coco from Flight of the Conchords!) as a 40-year-old suburban single mother, Liza, who begins a double life after her daughter goes away to college. In her new job at a fancy schmancy publishing company, Liza lies about her age saying she's 29 and is befriended by a "fellow" 20-something played by Duff. Foster, who is actually 38, looks like she could be 29, so it's not that much of a stretch. The plot does beg the question, would Hilary Duff's character freak out if she knew she was intermingling with a 40-year-old? That's only a little over a decade older. This is not a Never Been Kissed level of age fabrication, so it's hard to see how they're going to make this seem like a big deal.

Younger will be written and executive produced by Sex and the City creator Darren Star, so maybe there will be a way to make this age issue seem reasonable. SATC was able to continue making something out of Samantha's ten year age difference all those years.

Then you remember the show is on TV Land and all optimism comes crashing down again.

But good luck to Hilary! If you feel an irrational attachment to her like many of us here at Bustle, then surely you're rooting for her success as well. Just maybe not the success of this particular show.
