7 Best Blue Hair Dyes If You Want To Go Aqua

by Jessica Willingham

When it comes to hair color, everyone’s got the blues, greens, and even pinks. From Kylie Jenner, to Kelly Ripa, to Hilary Duff, it seems like every celebrity is into creative expression when it comes to hair. And while we’ve seen a rainbow of colors on the red carpet (like Miranda Lambert’s rosy shade), there’s no hue like blue. Here are the best blue hair dyes if you decide to foray into trendy hue territory.

Candy-colored hair is not just for pre-teens and Katy Perry anymore. One look on Instagram and you'll find that everyone is dying their hair pastel colors these days. Just recently, the leader of the crazy-color pack, Kylie Jenner, dyed her hair Christmas green, just in time for the holiday season. Even beauty-conservative celebrities like Kelly Ripa, are jumping on the mermaid hair trend. My conclusion? It looks like blue hair isn’t just a fad — it’s here to stay for the foreseeable future.

If all the blue hair hype has you curious and feeling creative, you can test out the trend before fully committing. Temporary hair dye products are better than ever and come in a variety of formulations, so you can test out a little or a lot of color without the full weight of “oh my gosh, what have I done?!”

Below are some of my favorite temporary hair dyes in a variety of blues. Don’t be afraid to mix colors and formulations to make the style all your own.

1. SPLAT Hair Chalk

SPLAT Hair Chalk, $8, Amazon

Hair chalk is a great option if you just want a strip or dip-dye of color that won't take a ton of time or money, and will wash out within a couple of days.

2. Bumble and Bumble Spray Chalk

Bumble and Bumble Spray Chalk, $19, Bumble and Bumble

I love the idea of spray chalk because it just sounds lot less messy. I think this formula is great if you want all-over color.

3. L'Oreal Professional Hairchalk Color Polish

L'Oreal Professional Hairchalk Color Polish, $12, Feel Unique

I like the intensity of this aqua green. If you cant find the exact shade of blue you're looking for, don't be afraid to mix formulations or colors to achieve your desired look.

4. Manic Panic Semi-Permenant Hair Color

Manic Panic Semi-Permanent Hair Color, $10, Amazon

If you're thinking about going permanent with blue, you can try this on for a few days before committing. It'll last a few washes to give you the full effect for a couple of days.

5. Makeup Geek Eyeshadow in Neptune

Makeup Geek Eyeshadow in Neptune, $6, Makeup Geek

If you don't have anything else handy, using eyeshadow as hair chalk works wonders. Set the color with a heating iron and hairspray and you're good to go for a few hours.

6. Rita Hazan Pop Color Temporary Color Spray For Hair

Rita Hazan Pop Color Temporary Color Spray For Hair, $10, Rita Hazan

Another great spray that comes in a classic "Kylie Jenner" teal.

7. Joico Vero K-PAK Color In Sapphire Blue

Joico Vero K-PAK Color in Sapphire Blue, $12, Amazon

If you're looking for a something a little more permanent than temporary hair dye, opt for this formula from Joico. It'll deliver bold and vibrant color, thanks to its high concentration. Better get those blinders ready — you're about to shine!
