Alexa Chung Rocks The It Coat You Need For Winter

by Eliza Florendo

My style crush on Alexa Chung is pretty much common knowledge by now, whether it be for her iconic long bob, killer lipsticks, or feminine, yet edgy silhouettes. At the FN Achievement Awards in NYC, Alexa Chung wore a black overcoat and essentially proved that it's the only coat you'll need this fall and winter season, minus the really cold days. You'll need a parka for those. Trust me, the North East is no joke.

If you haven't checked out Alexa Chung's impeccable wardrobe yet, do yourself a gigantic favor and Google it. I mean, this chick is so stylish that she even has a Mulberry bag named after her. Can we talk about #stylegoals? According to ELLE UK, Chung has won British Style Icon for three years in a row at the British Fashion Awards. If I were to choose two women who's confidence and sense of style I could emulate, it would be Chungs, and of course, Carine Roitfeld. Both these two women carry such a sense of effortless chicness, I'm constantly green with envy.

So of course, it comes as no surprise that Chung looked like an elegant angel at the award ceremony in New York City. She showed up in a white asymmetrical midi dress (already in love) paired with red Gianvito Rossi single-strapped heels, adding just a pop of color. And what did she finish it off with? The black overcoat, of course.

So exactly why is the black overcoat the staple piece you'll need this season? Well, for starters, its extremely warm. You can pretty much convince me to wear anything long in this weather. And two, it makes anything look elegant. Jeans and a tee? No problem. Instantly elevated. Over a dress? Great! Even throw it on over a pair of denim shorts and a white button up underneath, and you'll look instantly put together.

It's just one of those items that completes a look with minimal effort. To emulate Chung's impeccable style, find some of our favorite picks, below, other colors included!

Camel is always a good idea — it's my second favorite neutral!

If I'm being completely honest, I sometimes throw on my overcoat and some leggings whenever I'm in a pinch for time. When it's buttoned up, pretty much any ensemble instantly looks more elegant. You know what they say — wardrobe staples are everything, and a long overcoat is certainly an important one.
