San Bernardino Vigils Honor Victims — PHOTOS

by Melissah Yang

A California city has been left seeking answers after two shooters on Wednesday opened fire at a staff holiday party in San Bernardino, killing 14 people and injuring another 21. As officials continue to investigate what may have motivated Syed Farook, 28, and wife Tashfeen Malik, 27, to unleash a barrage of bullets upon Farook's co-workers from the county public health department and staffers of the Inland Regional Center where the party was being held, the San Bernardino community held multiple vigils to remember the shooting victims Thursday evening, coming together to mourn the people who died and honor the lives they lived.

The coroner's office released names of all 14 shooting victims just hours before the candlelight vigil took place at San Manuel 66ers Stadium. A few thousand people were in attendance, holding candles and signs of supportive message, and listened to remarks from a dozen speakers, including Mayor R. Carey Davis as well as local religious leaders. "Let us remember the precious lives that we have lost and dedicate and commit ourselves to strengthen our families to overcome, but to recognize that this tragedy will not paralyze us or keep us from moving forward or coming closer together," Davis said.

The pictures don't lie. Grief, horror, shock — emotions that no person should ever have to endure are there. But what's also abundantly clear from these touching images that the San Bernardino community will rise above this tragedy together.

A vigil was also held Thursday evening at San Bernardino County's largest mosque, Baitul Hameed Mosque, located in Chino. The remembrance was open to people of all faiths, and some members of law enforcement also attended. (Farook and Malik were not members of this mosque.)
