This Tweet Sums Up Your Scott Weiland Feelings

by Amy Mackelden

The news that broke late Thursday evening about Scott Weiland's death has shaken the Internet. Fans have been shocked at Weiland's sudden and unexpected passing at the age of 48 while on tour with his band The Wildabouts. Having fronted the legendary Stone Temple Pilots, collaborated with other musicians, and written some of the most iconic songs of the '90s, it's sad to hear that Weiland is no longer with us. And one fan on Twitter encompassed the feeling of loss that we're all experiencing in one well-worded tweet that's worth looking at.

One of the reasons there's been such an outpouring of emotional messages in response to the death of Scott Weiland is because he's responsible for the songs that people grew up listening to. The music which underscores childhoods, teenage years, and the difficult transition into adulthood, has a lasting effect on a person. We never forget the songs we listened to on repeat in our bedrooms before we knew what our lives were going to be, and that's what this tweet highlights with one simple phrase. "You were the soundtrack to my teens."

As reported in the NY Times, researchers from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine discovered that “Music is well-known to connect deeply with adolescents and to influence identity development, perhaps more than any other entertainment medium.” Which, at least in part, explains why we hold a special place in our hearts, and our music collections, for the songs we listened to growing up. Not only do these songs connect us to a completely different time in our lives, they remind us of the emotions we felt, and the situations we were going through. A song can often help get a person through a difficult time or an upsetting event. Which is why it's privilege to say that Weiland's music soundtracked so many people's lives.

The messages are sure to continue flooding Twitter over the weekend, with fans of the musician, Stone Temple Pilots, Velvet Revolver, and Weiland's many other musical endeavors responding to the news of his sad passing. However, this one message is the one that I think truly encompasses the breadth of the legacy that Weiland left behind. Scott Weiland was the soundtrack to so many people's lives, and will continue to be. Whether he was the soundtrack to our teen years or our todays, Weiland's music will live on, just as it deserves to. He will be missed.
