Why "Hotline Bling" Didn't Get A Grammy Nom

by Nicole Pomarico

Now that "Hotline Bling" is all over the radio, has been turned into a meme of varying incarnations, and is probably stuck in your head most of the time, it's hard to deny that the Drake track is one of the biggest songs of 2015. So naturally, when the 2016 Grammy nominations were announced on Monday morning, I figured that the catchy song was a shoo-in for Record Of The Year. The reality? Not so much. Surprisingly, the song was missing from the list this year, and unless you already know why "Hotline Bling" wasn't nominated for a Grammy, you're probably a little confused, too.

But it's not because the powers that be at the Grammy Academy decided they hate Drake's oversized sweater from the music video. Nope, it's all because of timing, and that's why it was left off the list this year. Technically, "Hotline Bling" was eligible for a nomination this year, since it just barely made the August 26 submission cut off date when it was released this summer. Drake could have submitted it for consideration, but Fuse confirms that he and his team chose not to, for whatever reason. So if you're personally offended that the song didn't receive a nomination like I am, don't worry — it has nothing to do with Drake's talent, as he is truly an angel sent down from heaven to bless us with sick beats.

Unfortunately, no one from Drake's camp has explained the decision, but it does make sense. Maybe the song was released too late in the year and Drake's people didn't think it could stand a chance against songs that have had way more time to gain tractional all year long? Maybe they were scared that "Hotline" bling is so good, it would scare all of the other artists away from attending the Grammys? It could have been for any of these reasons, really.

And if you're still holding onto the hope of seeing Drake take the Grammy stage to accept a golden Gramophone, all hope isn't lost. Drake was nominated in the categories of Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song, and If You're Reading This, It's Too Late was nominated for Best Rap Album. Chances are good he'll have something to celebrate on Grammy night, even if it isn't because of "Hotline Bling."

Besides, the dancing Drake meme will never not be funny, so isn't that a win in and of itself?
