Frozen may have been released way back on Nov. 27, but everyone is still obsessed with it. It's been killing at the box office, just won a Golden Globe and was nominated for two Oscars on Thursday morning. Those nominations have just brought not just the movie's composer and songwriter, Robert Lopez, very close to an EGOT, but Frozen itself.
If you're not familiar with the term EGOT, it stands for Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony, the biggest awards of four different sides of entertainment. Only 11 people have won all four and Lopez is edging closer to becoming the twelfth. No single movie has ever won all of the prizes.
Lopez, who co-wrote the music for Frozen with his wife Kristen Anderson-Lopez, already has three Tonys for his work on Avenue Q and The Book of Mormon, a Grammy for the Book of Mormon soundtrack and two daytime Emmys for composing the children's series The Wonder Pets.
So if "Let It Go" wins the Oscar for Best Original Song, Lopez's EGOT will be complete. There are no guarantees, especially since at the Golden Globes it was beat by "Ordinary Love" from Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, but we're definitely rooting for Lopez and Elsa come March.
Frozen is also nominated for Best Animated Feature, which it should easily win and really should count towards Lopez's EGOT. No, he didn't direct the movie, but it wouldn't be the same without its music. If Frozen does win that prize, a much surer victory, it could be on its way to its own EGOT.
Disney announced that the film will be a Broadway play, qualifying it for a Tony, and the record-setting soundtrack should easily win at least one Grammy. All that would be left is an Emmy and I think The Adventures of Olaf could make for a great kid's show.
Lopez, Anna, and Elsa should call Tracy Jordan — they might have some jewelry to pick out.
