Could Saint's Name Be An Homage To A Designer?

by Rosie Narasaki

Love it or hate it, Kanye West and Kim Kardashian's latest baby name — Saint West — is certainly something of a head scratcher. After all, there are so many different potential meanings behind the name (from biblical to heretical, and everything in between) — but given the parents' predilection for all things fashion, some are already wondering: Could Saint West be an homage to fashion house Yves Saint Laurent?

Well, thanks to Kanye's flair for contention, signs point to no. Back in the day, he was friends with current Saint Laurent creative director, Hedi Slimane — but since an incident in 2013 it's been all bad blood, all day, so it's unlikely he named his newborn son after the brand. Reportedly, the two were on good terms until Slimane told West he could only attend Saint Laurent's show if he agreed to forego all other shows. Unsurprisingly, this seriously ticked West off — as he put it to W Magazine, "Cause it’s like, Yo! Nobody can tell me where I can and can’t go. Man, I’m the number-one living and breathing rock star."

West was so angry, he even included Slimane in his famous Madison Square Garden rant, and wrote the song "I Am A God" about their fight.

So, yeah: I suppose you could say it's unlikely the name "Saint" is in any way related to Yves Saint Laurent, because Kanye would never allow it — no matter how fabulous their clothes are, and how luxuriously on-point their cosmetics happen to be. Though, that said, he definitely was a fan of the brand, back in the days before Slimane dared cross his path — he's name-checked them in two of his songs, once in 2008's "Diamonds in Sierra Leone," and once in 2005's "Pinocchio Story."

Alright, now that you know that story, you can go back to freaking out about the name, like most of Twitter did.
