This Is The Secret To Pulling Off Flower Crowns

As far as things that generally look cooler on Instagram than IRL go, flower crowns might take the cake. Donned by music festival attendees and celebrity brides alike, those gorgeous halos of fresh peonies and baby's breath can be intimidating to pop on if you're not, say, Vanessa Hudgens. However, Christy Meisner Doramus of Crowns By Christy recently let me in on a couple tips for pulling off those floral headpieces as flawlessly as all your favorite fashion bloggers.

The first tip? "Your hair should be down," Doramus insists. It makes sense, since you're probably going for a sort of hippie-angel-forest princess vibe if you're rocking a flower crown — and hippie-angel-forest princesses never wear ponytails. For the actual placement, Doramus thinks the ideal spot to rest your crow is about an inch to and inch and a half back from your hairline. "Some people put it closer down on the forehead, but I prefer it back," she says, adding that "If you have bangs, let them show!" she says. The point of all this is to make sure you're still the focus of the whole look. If the crown rests directly across your forehead, it becomes more of a distraction than a pretty accessory to your already-fierce self.

If you have a larger-than-standard-flower-crown-size head, like I do, Doramus recommends clipping the crown at the back and attaching ribbon to each end that you can tie to fit you perfectly. After all, having to adjust any piece of clothing or accessory all night is pretty much the quickest way to feel like you're not rocking it.

Now that you're ready to pull the piece off, why not have yourself a little DIY party? Check out the video below, where Doramus demonstrates how to make a flower crown at home.
