7 Sitcoms '2 Broke Girls' Fans Will Love

by Molly Freeman

It may seem like 2 Broke Girls only just returned from its long summer hiatus between Season 4 and Season 5 — probably because it did only start airing again in November — but the show will again take a few weeks off, this time for the holiday season. Unfortunately, that means the fans have to take a few weeks away from Max and Caroline's hijinks as they try to raise the money for their cupcake business. But on the bright side, this CBS comedy isn't taking a month (or two or three) off like some other series; 2 Broke Girls will return Jan. 6 at a new time on a new night!

The network is switching the comedy to Wednesdays at 8 p.m. from its usual 9:30 p.m. Thursday slot, while new comedy Angel From Hell (aka Jane Lynch being a comedy boss) premieres at 2 Broke Girls' old time. Still, a couple weeks off gives you time to try out some other series that are no longer on the air, or that you just never had time for before (with all the television readily available at our fingertips nowadays, that's perfectly understandable). So, I've got you covered with seven suggestions for your next comedy obsession, all based in New York City, that'll keep you laughing right up until 2 Broke Girls returns!

1. Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23

This beloved sitcom only ran for two short seasons on ABC (seriously, the whole series consists of only 19 episodes), but it generated plenty of fan outpouring asking the network to save it, and has lived on as one of those cancelled-too-soon comedies. Following June, a bright-eyed and bushy-tailed recent college grad, and Chloe, a jaded and slightly sociopathic NYC resident, the two girls attempt to navigate the world of Manhattan together — along with their pal James Van Der Beek (played by James Van Der Beek). The whole series is available on Netflix.

2. Broad City

If you really think about it, Abbi and Ilana have a lot in common with Max and Caroline: Two friends just trying to follow their dreams in New York City. Of course, the humor of Broad City is a little different than 2 Broke Girls, but entirely enjoyable in its own right. If that sounds like it's up your alley, both seasons of Broad City are available on Hulu.

3. How I Met Your Mother

Some fans may have soured on this long-running sitcom after the series finale didn't turn out how many would have liked, but anyone can tell you that How I Met Your Mother is one of the most beloved comedies of the past decade. Plus, their iconic booth in MacLaren's is based on a real bar in New York City. So, if you missed out on the How I Met Your Mother hype, all nine seasons are available to marathon on Netflix.

4. The Mindy Project

Mindy Lahiri's life as a doctor in New York City may be far removed from Max and Caroline's lives as diner waitresses, but they're all part of the experience in the city that never sleeps. Plus, The Mindy Project was so beloved by fans that after it was cancelled by FOX, Hulu resurrected the comedy for a new season. Now all four seasons are available on Hulu for you to watch and love.

5. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

Kimmy Schmidt may not be your average New Yorker given her time spent in a cult, but she — along with her ineffable roommate Titus and their kooky landlady Lillian — manages to conquer the city with her own unique brand of optimistic determination. Plus, the series was co-created by Tina Fey, which is a major selling point. Another huge selling point: The whole first season is available on Netflix. I dare you not to marathon it, I dare you!

6. 30 Rock

Of course, the pinnacle of Tina Fey television is her NBC sitcom, 30 Rock, which is available in its entire seven-season glory on Netflix. The series was once part of NBC's famed Thursday night comedy block (along with Community and Parks and Recreation) and continues to create new fans thanks to the show's availability on Netflix.

7. Friends

One of the most iconic New York City sitcoms is Friends. The 10-season comedy follows six friends — Chandler, Monica, Ross, Rachel, Joey, and Phoebe — who try to find love and happiness in New York City, while also drinking plenty of coffee at Central Perk. It was a big deal when Netflix added all 10 seasons to its streaming site, so it's time to take advantage of that if you haven't already!

So, even if you have to wait a few weeks for new episodes of 2 Broke Girls, there are plenty of other New York City-based sitcoms to enjoy while waiting!
