Britney & 'Twin Peaks' Jam Is A Fine Cup Of Mashup

by Kristie Rohwedder

I have yet to listen to a mashup that cannot be lumped into one of the three following categories: 1) “Wait, why is this happening?”, 2) “Hey, this is fun,” and 3) “What I am listening to right now is nothing short of transcendent, and no that is not a hyperbolic statement.” Composer Conrad Tao recently shared his mashup of “Everytime” by Britney Spears and Angelo Badalamenti's Twin Peaks theme, and it is Mashup Hall of Fame material (h/t Vulture). It is stunning. It is spooky. It is perfect. The "Everytime"/Twin Peaks theme mashup belongs in group number three, no question about it.

When I listen to the chilling collision of Spears’s 2003 piano ballad and the theme from the cult classic television series, I can’t help but picture the pop star dancing in that red room with the chevron print floor. (I'm sure I am not the only one.) As the mashup plays on a loop, the “Oops!… I Did It Again” red latex catsuit-clad Brit Brit does slowmo jazz square after slowmo jazz square. This goes on for several minutes. Or maybe it goes on for several hours? It is hard to say. It is the most poignant dream I’ve never dreamt.
