'Star Wars' Themed Broadcast Is Out Of This World

by Lara Rutherford-Morrison

As fans wait with bated breath for Star Wars: The Force Awakens to open tomorrow (TOMORROW!), I think it’s safe to say that Star Wars mania has officially taken over the world. Nothing — not even the weather — is safe from the Force-loving franchise, if this pun-loving Star Wars themed weather report from the UK is anything to go by. Not that I’m complaining, mind you; if anything, I’m more excited about the film coming out than ever — and I bet that you R2. (heh.)*

In a 39-second clip, Channel 5 weather presenter Sian Welby manages to fit 12 pun-tastic Star Wars references into a national weather report. Some of her allusions to the sci-fi series are easy to catch, like “There will be a fairly light breeze; the force is strong, though….” and “Tonight, the weather strikes back.” Other puns take a more careful ear to detect, such as “…with a Leia of cloud covering the U.K.”

Probably the worst (and therefore also sort of the best) puns come in this line:

If you Luke father west you will be seeing a glimmer of sunshine – if you're Wookie.

I can't decide is that's awful or amazing.

Most of the forecast’s references are nods to the original trilogy, but Welby also sneaks in a clever allusion to the new one:

This isn’t the first time that Welby has gotten punny with her screen time. Back in October, she did a Back to the Future themed weather forecast. (Best line: “You’ll want that central heating turned up to 1.21 gigawatts, at least.”)

*OK, I know. That was terrible. #sorrynotsorry
