Which '90s Girl Power Heroine Are You?

by Chloe Kent

I've never been shy about my '90s nostalgia, even during the '90s. It has nothing to do with the fact that the current trendiness of choker necklaces or denim overalls fits perfectly into my sartorial aesthetic, (although I would be lying if I said that it didn't help) — it has more to do with the fact that, for me the decade represented so much promise and optimism. Plus, combined with the plethora of powerful female role models available to me at the time in the cultural realm, it actually makes perfect sense that my viewing habits molded me into the kind of girl who was like, "Yeah, I guess I might as well run for the President of the United States."

Isn't there something so remarkable about all the girl power that took over the '90s? From Joss Whedon's Buffy the Vampire Slayer to the Spice Girl-branded "girl power" catchphrase, it was an amazing era — and one that included a lot of female characters and figures we can all relate to. But, everyone relates differently: And a lot of how we relate to them hinges on our personalities.

Whether or not you don't really buy into astrology or you check your horoscope before you get out of bed in the morning, you have to admit — it's pretty on point when it comes to determining which '90s gal you are.

Aries (March 21 — April 19): Buffy Summers, Buffy The Vampire Slayer

A textbook Aries ram, Buffy is not someone you'd want to butt heads with. While her courage and emotional strength in the face of hardship may lead her through danger, it's that devil-may-care Aries confidence that often takes her there in the first place.

Taurus (April 20 — May 20): Zenon Kar, Zenon, Girl Of The 21st Century

Zenon's commitment and determination in returning back to her space station is exactly what makes a Taurus so reliable. Particularly if you need to gather evidence and/or uncover corruption in space from good ol' planet Earth.

Gemini (May 21 — June 20): Kelly Kapowski, Saved By The Bell

Like any good Gemini, Kelly is bubbly, easy to be around, and excited to tell you everything. While she could rule Bayside High with an iron fist, Kelly puts her natural extroversion to use by taking leadership positions amongst her peers. Whether it's cheerleading, swimming, volleyball, or softball, the dual-headed Gemini easily adapts to her surroundings and is a natural-born leader without the bossy tendencies of, say, a Jessie Spano type.

Cancer (June 21 — July 22): Lisa Simpson, The Simpsons

Lisa's strong pragmatism, sense of self, and sensitive nature have brought her hardship over the years, certainly — but at the end of the day, it's her resolve that gets her through any challenge. Even if she's in her own head the entire time.

Leo (July 23 — August 22): Cher Horowitz, Clueless

Just as any classic Leo would, Cher's generosity and deep interest in others sometimes moves her to maneuver situations to the point of interference. Ever the matchmaker, party planner, and all-around golden girl, Leo's lust for life and natural leadership abilities make the perfect #girlboss. So long as she doesn't get in her own way.

Virgo (August 23 — September 22): Clarissa Darling, Clarissa Explains It All

As meticulous she is at creating video games and making enormous posters of her brother's head to throw darts at, Clarissa's natural inclination, as a Virgo, is to worry. Which is why Clarissa's dread of picture day or taking her driver's test can take so many hilariously anxious turns.

Libra (September 23 — October 22): Topanga Lawrence, Boy Meets World

Idealistic and intellectual, Libras always have their eyes on the prize — which is why the tendencies that got Topanga into Yale are same ones that almost pushed her away from the man she was clearly meant to be with.

Scorpio (October 23 — November 21): Helga Pataki, Hey Arnold

OK, so she might have a shrine in the back of her closet for the same boy she publicly torments, but hey, you can't say a Scorpio isn't passionate!

Sagittarius (November 22 — December 21): Ms. Frizzle, The Magic School Bus

Unflinchingly energetic, optimistic, and adventurous, consider Ms. Frizzle the ultimate Taurus — from her intellectual curiosity down to her (sometimes irresponsible) free spiritedness. Sure, she probably should've been fired by now for all of the times she led a busload of eight year olds into danger, but like any Taurus worth her salt, you don't ever have to worry that The Friz will leave you hanging.

Capricorn (December 22 — January 19): Daria Morgendorffer, Daria

Introverted, intelligent, and hilariously sarcastic, day-to-day Capricorns remain pretty even-tempered and well-meaning. Which is why Daria's good-heartedness usually shines through her cynical demeanor.

Aquarius (January 20 — February 18): Elaine Benes, Seinfeld

Aquarius folk are totally unpredictable from one minute to the next, just like Seinfeld's Elaine — but even when they are up to no good (which they very well might be), their friendly smiles ensure an Aquarius usually never has to take the blame.

Pisces (February 19 — March 20): Phoebe Buffay, Friends

If those born under Pisces can come off as secretive, it's just because their natural idealism lends itself to vagueness. Just as you might expect from a Pisces, Phoebe is intuitive, compassionate, and, sometimes seemingly from another planet.

Can't you just feel the GIRL POWER reverberating through the zodiac?
