The Makeup That Broke The Internet This Year

by Emily McClure

2015 was the year of the beauty product Hunger Games. From lipsticks to highlighters and everything in-between, there were several new beauty products that sold out pretty much instantly on the Internet. Whether the product came from an A-List celebrity, or a top tier beauty brand, there was no stopping makeup-obsessed online shoppers once these products were released. Within minutes, these items went from "add to cart" to "add to wait list." From there, many of these sold out products would jump to eBay for ten times the original cost. If that isn't a beauty guru struggle, then I don't know what is.

As someone who waited (virtually) in line for the Naked Vault II, there is a sense of madness that surrounds these product launches. It's as if everyone on the Internet is waiting to click on the same exact checkout button. It's overwhelming, and honestly, a bit frightening. What sets these products a part from other launches is that hype that surrounds it. Whether it's a great deal, limited edition, or a celebrity staple, these certain products absolutely took over the Internet. Here's a look back at some of the beauty products that "broke the Internet" in 2015.

1. Benefit's They're Real Colored Mascaras & Push Up Liners

In June, Benefit Cosmetics expanded their "They're Real" collection to include new, colorful shades, and the Internet loved in. Bloggers and beauty fans alike were raving about the latest lineup for months after its release.

2. LA Splash Harry Potter Lipsticks

There are very few things that the Internet loves more than Harry Potter. So, when LA Splash launched a line of lipsticks inspired by the popular series, fans lost their minds. It just goes to show you that you're never too old for magic (or a magical lipstick).

3. Urban Decay Naked Smoky Palette

There are very few things that are as exciting as a Naked palette launch. After a month of anticipation Urban Decay released the latest installment, Naked Smoky, in July. By the next morning, it seemed as if everyone and their mother was Instagramming their latest Naked purchase.

4. Tom Ford Lipstick In Drake

Drake Lip Stick, $35, tomford.com

After almost a year of anticipation, Tom Ford finally released his "Lips & Boys" lipstick collection in December, and then Internet went crazy. Within minutes, the shade "Drake" sold out completely. It's unclear when the line is looking to restock the prized shade, however, if you're determined to get your hands on lipstick, some shops on eBay are currently selling the shade for $229.

5. Kylie Jenner Lip Kit

By far on of the biggest beauty trends in 2015 was #kyliejennerlips. So, when the reality star launched her lip kits on November 30, fans went crazy. Since it's release, the lip kits have sold out, been restocked, and then sold out again. It's that popular.

6. Urban Decay Naked Vault II

One of the biggest teases of 2015 was the Urban Decay Naked Vault II. Originally released in October, the vault sold out immediately. By the time media outlets had started reporting on the release, the collection already had a wait-list.

7. Becca x Jaclyn Shimmering Skin Perfector in Champagne Pop

Becca x Jaclyn Shimmering Skin Perfector, $38, sephora.com

Over the summer, Becca Cosmetics teamed up with YouTube powerhouse Jaclyn Hill to create a stunning highlighter dubbed "Champagne Pop." The highlighter was a best-seller from its first day of release. In fact, it was the top-selling item on Sephora.com on its launch day.

8. Pat McGrath Labs Gold 001 & Phantom 002

Phantom 002, $240, patmcgrath.com

When world renowned makeup artist, Pat McGrath talks about makeup, you listen. When the artist launches her first makeup items, the world all but stops.

Not only did these beauty products sell out, but they left an Internet sensation in their wake. Fingers crossed for more ground-breaking beauty product launches in 2016!
