5SOS Gave The Craziest 'Rolling Stone' Interview

by Tobi Gbile

The rise of Australian pop-punk band 5 Seconds of Summer has been quick and wild, and their success has reached new heights with the release of their first ever Rolling Stone cover. The stories and scandals revealed in the Five Seconds of Summer interview are pretty intense, to say the least, although the band's candor is no surprise; the Australian group has never been one to keep quiet. Drummer Ashton Irwin, guitarist Michael Clifford, bassist Calum Hood, and lead vocalist and guitarist Luke Hemmings have been on the path to mega-stardom since audiences were first introduced to them during One Direction's "Take Me Home" tour back in 2013, and a year later, they blew up the charts with their debut U.S. single "She Looks So Perfect." Since then, they have released two albums, won numerous awards, and have headlined their own worldwide tour.

These successes, and several others, are what made them the perfect candidates for Rolling Stone's latest cover story. While some fans appreciated the candid nature of the story (and rather exposing cover), member Michael Clifford wasn't very pleased, taking to Twitter to say: "i hate when people include everything in an article except the reason we're a band; the fans".

While I'm sorry to see that Clifford wasn't pleased with the way the band was portrayed in the article, there's no denying that the interview, full of wild revelations and answers to burning questions, is highly entertaining. Here are the craziest things learned about 5SOS from the Rolling Stone cover story:

1.) They Might Not Be on Good Terms With Justin Bieber

This is one of the reveals from the interview that has gained the most speed. While talking to the reporter, Clifford explained why Bieber might not be very fond of the band because they crashed his American Music Awards after-party. Explained Clifford, "I think he hates us." He added that at the after-party, Bieber "had his own album on loop for, like, two or three hours." Eek.

2.) The Bandmates Weren't Always Best Friends

When three of the members, Hood, Clifford, and Hemmings, went to school together, they were not always fond of one another. Hemmings revealed that when he first arrived in the seventh grade, he didn't have the best impression of Clifford: "He was kind of a d*ck. We didn't like each other for a while. I was chubby. My voice hadn't broken. Michael was tall and skinny and had great hair, so I was like, 'F*ck this guy.'" Glad to know that they're best of friends now, despite this.

3.) Calum Hood Has An Unusual Fear

Time to clear your Tumblr search history. Hood admitted that he isn't the biggest fan of the 5SOS fan fiction that gets circulated online, confessing: "I don't read that sh*t. It scares me."

4.) They Throw Wild Parties

Given their sudden rockstar status, it should come as no surprise that the band loves to attend a rager every now and then. However, the four boys know how to throw one of their own, too. While describing Clifford's 20th birthday party extravaganza at their house, the Rolling Stone interviewer reports, "Details are hazy, but the rest of the night included an outdoor fire with Niall Horan of One Direction and a game of Rock Band at 6 a.m., and also, quite likely, vodka shots, swimming and a New Found Glory dance party in the kitchen." Where was my invite?

5.) They Like To, Err... Get Their Freak On

With all of this fame comes tons of, uh, perks. When asked about their interaction with their female fans, Luke Hemmings said, "When you put four young dudes on a tour bus, playing theaters, then arenas, you're going to have sex with a lot of girls, I guess. We had a good time." Well, at least he's honest...

6.) Clifford Struggles With A Serious Health Issue

Little do people know, Clifford deals with some emotional battles. While speaking to the magazine, he opened up about his struggles with depression and his mental health, revealing that a few weeks earlier, he called the band's manager to say that he was "going home, I'm done. I'm going into hiding for, like, a month or two. I've been sad as hell lately." It's awful to hear that he was suffering, but it's good that he can now share his stories with others, as Clifford said that he's become "an advocate for mental health".

7.) They Play Some Crazy Pranks

Rolling Stone noted that while the band was in Milan, they pulled the biggest prank that they have done yet, and it is several of the members' favorite moment of the year. Explained Clifford, "We shut the window and jumped out and hid in the parking lot, and watched our managers go in the room. "They opened the door and were like, 'Where did the guys go?' "They went in the bathroom, the whole thing. They started freaking out...We could have ran. We could have ran far away."

Wow. Who would've thought that fans would learn this much about 5SOS in one article? Rolling Stone's candid look into the Australian band's wild life is fascinating, and it makes me wonder what crazy adventures are next for 5SOS. Looks like we'll all just have to wait and see.
