This 'Days of Our Lives' Star Is Leaving

Bad news for a Tuesday afternoon if you're a Days of Our Lives fan: According to Us Weekly, Alison Sweeney is leaving Days of Our Lives after 21 years, citing that she wants to take some time for herself after working on the soap for so long. Sweeney made the announcement during an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show today. "I have never had more than a two-week vacation [since I began Days] in that whole time and yeah," Sweeney explained. "It's [been] awesome. I love Sami, I love Salem, I love my job, I love daytime, I love the fans, I love everything about it." Sweeney is 37 now, meaning she joined the series when she was just 16, in 1993 — basically, a long time.

As for why Sweeney chose now to leave, she continued: "My daughter just turned 5 and my son is 9, and I just want to be with them and enjoy my last year...I'm going to be on Days all this year." There's no specific time for her departure just yet, though, so at the very least you can rest assured that Sami will be on Days of Our Lives for a while. "We'll see what happens!"

Considering there's no set departure date, writers also have yet to figure out how Sami will take her last bow on the show — but Sweeney has a few ideas, if anyone's interested. "I mean it would be awesome to have some kind of happy ending, but then I also think Sami probably deserves some sort of very twisted like Breaking Bad ending, I don't know."
