Keep Hair From Getting Greasy While You're Asleep

by Lindsey Rose Black

There's nothing quite as frustrating as going to bed with freshly washed, clean hair, and waking up to discover your roots are slicked in grease. If this sounds familiar, read on to learn exactly how to keep hair from getting greasy while you sleep. With these simple hacks, you'll wake up with hair that feels light and fresh instead of heavy and oily.

For what it's worth, you are totally not the only one up against the greasy hair struggle. I grew up in humid, humid Texas, and used to constantly wake up with greasy hair after nights sleeping with the windows open to try and fight against the sticky heat. To say the least, the weather pretty consistently got the best of me until I started proactively taking steps to prevent greasy hair before hitting the sheets.

Whether the weather is triggering you to sweat and create oily hair or your roots just naturally lean more to the greasy side, the hacks below will dramatically improve your situation. I've tested them all personally and totally stand by their effectiveness. Some of the tips will work immediately while others take longer to see a noticeable difference, but all are worth incorporating into your routine.

1. Use Shampoo For Oily Roots

Fighting greasy roots starts in your shower. Invest in a shampoo specifically designed to slow down oil production while still keeping your hair hydrated.

2. Try Detangling Spray Instead Of Conditioner

Conditioner can weigh your hair down and add to the slick roots struggle. Skip standard conditioner and try out a moisturizing detangler to mimic the smoothing effect without the heaviness.

3. Boost Your Scalp With Dry Shampoo Before Bed

Whether your hair is wet or dry before you fall asleep, lift the roots a little with dry shampoo before falling asleep to promote volume and fight oil.

4. Sleep With Your Hair Up

Popping your hair into a very (very) loose top knot will keep your roots from spreading oil to the rest of your strands.

5. Clean Your Pillowcase

You should clean your pillowcase weekly to keep your skin clear, but it's equally important for your hair. Since pillowcases collect grime, bacteria, and dead skin cells, frequent cleanings ensure you're not depositing all that yuckiness into your hair every time you fall asleep.
