Our First Look At Matt Damon In 'Bourne 5' Is Here

by Haley Chouinard

It's been nearly nine years since the world has seen Matt Damon as Jason Bourne. The Bourne Ultimatum came out in 2007, although it was set in 2004. Needless to say, a lot has happened since then. The Jason Bourne of 2016 will be working in a different world, a world with iPhones and social media and Game of Thrones. Damon acknowledged how much the world will have changed for Bourne in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, which also featured the first photo of Matt Damon in Bourne 5. "There’s been the financial collapse, the great recession, all these issues of cyberwarfare and civil liberties," the actor said. The movie will technically be the fifth installment of the Bourne movies, as The Bourne Legacy came out in 2012, though neither Damon or director Paul Greengrass, who has helmed all of the other films, were involved in it.

Though the plot and filming of the new movie have been kept secret, it's believed that it will feature an NSA-style cybersecurity department finding Bourne's location. It's also been announced that Hollywood It Girl Alicia Vikander will appear in the movie, along with Tommy Lee Jones and Vincent Cassel. Julia Stiles and Joan Allen will be returning to the franchise. Bourne discovered his true identity at the end of the last film, and Damon told EW that "we find him in a dark and tortured place" in the new movie.

The photo features the brooding intensity that is synonymous with Jason Bourne. The film, which is based on the book series by Robert Ludlum, will be set in present day, after Bourne has been in hiding for 12 years. For awhile, it seemed that Damon and Greengrass had left the Bourne story for good. Greengrass said in an interview with The New York Times that Damon persuaded him to return to the franchise. "I was a little bit anxious about how it was going to go," Greengrass said. "And I remember he said to me, ‘It’s not a bad thing to do it just because people would really love to see us do another one.'" Yes, they absolutely would.

Bourne 5 hits theaters in July 2016.
