Benedict Cumberbatch Better Be At The Globes

by Katherine Cusumano

Benedict Cumberbatch has a tendency to show up where people least expect him: at the premiere of Star Wars: The Force Awakens (after vehement denials that he'd appear in the movie); as Marvel's newest superhero in Doctor Strange; in BBC's Sherlock adaptation, even as his film star has elevated him higher and higher. So no one could fault fans for thinking there's a good chance he'll end up somewhere on the red carpet at big 2016 awards shows, and many are wondering if Benedict Cumberbatch will be at the Golden Globes. Sure, the star was not nominated for an award this year — no great surprise, since he appeared in relatively few films on the heels of last year's The Imitation Game — so he has no professional obligation to attend. But as he looks to resume a full plate of projects in the next year, he will (hopefully) return to the awards circuit soon.

Even if he does not make an appearance at the 2016 Golden Globes, Cumberbatch has a big year ahead. He's busy filming and promoting the aforementioned Doctor Strange, and with so many huge Marvel Studios productions coming out in the next two years, he has to stay on top of his game to keep his name at the fore of all of our thoughts. (As if we could ever forget it.) The actor has kept busy this past year, too, appearing infrequently in the public eye but focusing on his family (in 2015, he married and had a son) and his films (he has six upcoming projects on his IMDb page, excluding work on Sherlock ). So if he does choose to forgo the red carpet extravaganza on Sunday, it'll be disappointing, but not a great shock.

He'll definitely be missed, though. The Golden Globes are widely recognized as the most fun awards show in Hollywood (think boozy celebrities and off-color jokes — Ricky Gervais, I'm watching you), and Cumberbatch would be a great addition. Still, even if he doesn't show up this year, he's sure to be a fixture on the awards circuit next year with so many impending projects. We couldn't go two years without Cumberbatch on a red carpet, now, could we?
