Stephane Rolland's 2014 Spring Haute Couture Collection Will Have You Revisiting the Peplum
The peplum is suddenly the most badass evening look ever, thanks to Stéphane Rolland's Spring/Summer 2014 Haute Couture collection. The designer showed a stunning array of gowns in a bold color palate of white, black, and yellow. Geometric lines were tempered by soft, gauzy fabrics. And then there were the peplums! Asymmetrical peplums, sculptural peplums, gently sloping peplums. Who thought the peplum could be so multifaceted? Stéphane Rolland did, and he showed us all how to rock it. Yellow Cascade
A sleek, simple dress fitted from neck to ankle gets the peplum treatment with a cascading hip ruffle that flounces asymmetrically across the leg line. Simple and dramatic all at once.
Architectural
This stark black and white gown has a conservative neckline, but it’s all party from the hips down. The elaborate white structure circling the waist doesn’t much resemble its peplum forefather. Rather, it’s like an epic arts and crafts project made of sea creatures. Either way, anyone in this gown is the life of the party.
Space Age '60's
If Mad Men took place in a space craft, this is the kind of dress Joan would wear.
Sheer Magic
Origami meets couture. The sheer fabric of this dress is the perfect backdrop for the elaborate design across the chest and hips and that teeny tiny white belt makes is somehow demure.
Ruffle Splash
This ruffle starts by encircling the waist of the electric strapless dress before it sweeps down toward the hem. Clean lines paired with a large splash makes an elegant statement.
Goth Gown
While this doesn’t quite fall into the peplum category, major props for giving the mullet dress a high fashion makeover. The long sleeves and lace panel at the front give the dress a Lydia Deetz vibe, and what could be cooler than that?
Sculptural Peplum
The asymmetrical detail at this waist of this dress offsets that high neck and cap sleeves by creating a smooth, flowing line to the floor.
High-Low
Another successful blending of solid and sheer fabrics, this time paired with stunning long sleeves topped by puffed shoulders. Girlish details, rendered in a way that speaks to space-age maturity rather than childhood.
Black and White Geometry
The geometric leather bodice and arm pieces are super tough, but they pair brilliantly with the white floor length skirt. That explosion of chiffon at the hip is a delightful surprise.
Sun Goddess
This dress looks like the fiery rays of the sun exploding in waves over the model’s shoulders. Over the top ruffles done so, so right.
