What Happens When You Stop Brushing Your Hair

by Sienna Fantozzi

There has been a lot of debate out there about whether brushing your hair is actually good or bad for it, but one thing is for sure: There are definitely several things that happen when you stop brushing your hair. If you're one of those people (guilty) who never brush their hair because you have wavy/curly hair and don't want to mess it up, then you may not notice these things as much, but if you routinely brush your hair and decide to give it a break, then you might want to prepare yourself for the side effects.

The old wives tale about needing to brush your hair 100 strokes a day or whatever might not be as wise as we once thought. In addition to completely destroying curls, brushing your hair too often can cause damage, and even pull out your hair, creating breakage or thinning. Yikes! So that's reason enough to swear off brushing for good, besides the lazy factor, and all.

But if you've been a life long brusher and decide to go cold turkey on it, then prepare yourself for these seven things that can happen when you stop brushing your hair. Not all of it's bad!

1. Expect Tangles

Depending on your hair type and if it tangles and knots easily, you may start to notice more tangles in your hair than when you were brushing, but try and work through them gently with your fingers. TBH, tugging at tangles with a brush could cause your hair to break.

2. Expect Kinks

If you have wavy hair, you probably won't notice, but straight-haired girls that need to brush out their hair to get rid of any weird kinks from sleeping/pony tails holders might start to notice them more.

3. Look Out For Oil Buildup

Brushing your hair can be beneficial in the sense that it distributes oil from your roots (which don't really need it), to your dry ends (which do). Without brushing, you could notice your roots getting greasy faster.

4. You'll Become More Hands-On

You'll be inclined to reach for your brush, but you'll stop yourself and begin to use your hands. For styling, for smoothing, for working through tangles, for distributing product — your hands are more gentle than a brush, anyway, so get in there and work with your hair.

5. You Might Clog Your Shower Drain

When you brush and loosen your hair, strands definitely come out on your brush, but when you don't brush your hair, the natural hair you lose everyday will buildup and come out in the shower drain. Don't be alarmed, it's normal to lose 50-100 strands a day.

6. You'll Embrace Bedhead

Your hair may not look perfectly polished without brushing it, but undone bedhead is so in right now.

7. You'll Have More Volume

Brushing your hair tames any poofiness and causes it to lie down, so when you don't brush it, it will feel more voluminous.
