'90s Accessories That Attended The Golden Globes

We all have our favorite accessories from the '90s (from tattoo choker necklaces to denim bucket hats and sparkly scrunchies). But that category takes on a whole new and exciting level when we're talking red carpet '90s accessories. While the designer gowns and hairstyles usually steal the show during awards season, I think it's time we pay some homage to the extra frills that move a pretty outfit into memorable heights. The Golden Globes during the '90s were everything you'd want them to be: A parade of silk dresses and minimalist shifts, paired with quintessential '90s jewelry like choker necklaces and stacked, grungy bracelets. Our favorite present-day stars were just starting out in their careers back then, coming to their first award shows wearing some, erm, questionable choices that might make them wince looking back. I'm talking about color-coordinated everything and stacked bangles and baubles that don't necessarily look Harry Winston-esque.

But that's why they're awesome. Looking back on these go-to accessories can bring on a major case of nostalgia, where it's hard not to think back on your old jewelry box and your favorite slap bracelets and jelly necklaces. Below are 11 amazing '90s accessories that attended the Golden Globes.

1. Tinted Shades

Who says your reading glasses can't make a statement? Jack Nicholson added some personality to his tux by playing around with orange-tinted glasses, helping him stand out from the sea of black suits.

2. Silky, Satiny Shawls

Shawls were everywhere. It would seem no gal could ever leave her house without her shawl in the '90s — not when an evening dress was involved, anyway. And the silkier and more luxurious, the better.

3. Choker Necklaces

The '90s was the age of Britney Spears and Clueless, so it's no surprise that chokers made their way onto the red carpet too. Now, I'm not saying Britney Spears' music videos inspired haute couture, but I am saying everyone and their mother ended up dabbling with the trend back then.

4. Stacked Bracelets

Here's Cameron Diaz looking pretty grunge and edgy with her stacked, spiked bracelets at the Golden Globes. While this might not be her go-to look anymore, I think we can all appreciate the surprising casualness of the accessories.

5. Feather Boas

I really think these should make a comeback on the red carpet. There's nothing that says "old school glamour" quite like a white feather boa wrapped all saucy-like around your shoulders.

6. Pearl Necklaces

Think back to your nana coming over for a special occasion when you were a kid, like a holiday dinner or an important anniversary. What was she wearing? Other than her favorite Chanel perfume, my money is on a pearl choker. There's something so wonderfully '90s and nostalgic about the necklace, especially when paired with sheer like this.

7. Droplet Necklaces

The '90s were all about that minimalism — as is apparent from Lisa Kudrow's delicate, inconspicuous droplet necklace. This is a far cry from the massive diamonds you often see adorned around celebrities' necks these days.

8. Patterned Shoes

The '90s were a crazy time to be alive. Generation X was becoming melancholy, people were making intense amounts of money on Wall Street, and you could make your heels match your coat exactly if you so wanted to.

9. Geometric Earrings

Paying homage to the decade right before the '90s, geometric earrings were still very much a thing before the millennium came around. The kitschy, '80s shape somehow becomes chicer when decked out in diamonds.

10. Color-Coordinated Accessories

If you were going to color-coordinate, you might as well go full monty by making your shawl match your clutch, match your platform heels, match your dress. This is how you monochrome, people. Take notes from Queen Stone.

11. Gold Bangles

Contrasting styles are what make fashion fun — something Jamie Lee Curtis knew, what with her thick gold bangle juxtaposing against her filmy, nightie-like dress.

And with the '90s trend coming back full swing in 2016, here's to wondering if we'll see any of these looks on the Jan. 10 red carpet.
