The Best '90s Hairstyle From The Golden Globes

by Katharine McEntee

When I think of '90s hairstyles, I immediately think of elaborate up-dos, long, shiny locks, and, of course, The Rachel. So when I embarked on a quest to find the best '90s hairstyle from the Golden Globes, it was not an easy task. The decade was a time when up-dos actually looked sophisticated and fresh, and when blowouts were essential (Calista Flockhart, I’m looking at you). So, choosing just one hairstyle seemed almost impossible, but nevertheless there had to be one look that reigned supreme.

Crowning Jennifer Aniston the Queen of '90s hair would have been the easy route, but it just didn’t seem right. Red carpet hair isn’t supposed to be your average everyday style, after all. It’s supposed to be something truly spectacular. And because I couldn't choose between an up-do or a blowout, I thought, why not compromise with a half-up? And so I chose Gwyneth Paltrow’s 1999 Golden Globes half-up 'do as the best hairstyle of the '90s.

I mean, who better than Paltrow to represent the '90s? The gal was a grunge goddess. From oversized leather jackets to dating Brad Pitt, the '90s were made for the actor. And her hairstyles were just as good as her dating game. In a matter of one decade, the babe sported every '90s hairstyle known to man — from an edgy pixie to perfectly polished up-dos to my personal favorite, her jaw dropping Golden Globes half-up.

Paltrow's super shiny Rapunzel-like hair is the stuff dreams are made of, and those middle parted bangs are the cherry on top of an already perfect hairstyle. To add to her already-stunning look, Paltrow kept her makeup fresh and played up her cheeks with a rosy hue, giving her the glow of a winner.

Since the Golden Globes are arguably more casual than other awards shows, Paltrow's separates fit right in, yet are edgy enough to stand out. Her outfit was comprised of what looks to be a black tube top, a cardigan, and a metallic taffeta ball gown. While this is not my favorite dress of Paltrow’s — I am partial to the Barbie-esque pink Oscars gown she wore the same year — she still looks refined and elegant as always.

Gwyneth Paltrow isn’t afraid to mix it up, and I think that’s why she is one of my favorite celebrities to follow on the red carpet. She is constantly taking risks when it comes to new hairstyles and trends, and as far as I’m concerned, it definitely pays off.
