7 Greasy Hair Solutions To Combat Oiliness

by Jessica Willingham

Oily hair is the worst. Every person born with oily hair knows it can be a hard balance between having just enough oil and being a full-blown grease ball. Fret no longer, greasy scalp-havers — here are seven greasy hair solutions that can combat the grime immediately, in a day, and over time for good.

In case you didn't know, greasy hair is caused from an overabundance of sebum, or oil, produced from your oil glands. These fancy little wonders of the human body are insanely smart: They know when your skin needs hydration and work in overdrive when you're extra dry in the winter months. Although your oil glands know exactly what to do, they can overproduce sebum as a result of your beauty routine.

Although you may not realize it, you could be stripping your scalp of natural oils, contributing to dryness, and generally putting your hair on the fritz because of products you use (or don't use), as well as your methods. How often you wash your locks, what products you use (and how often), and what your go-to hairstyle is could be the reason your strands are greasy. That's right, your greasy hair is not a forever sentence and there are some seriously brilliant and affordable ways to combat oily strands.

Below are some tips and techniques for mitigating a greasy scalp.

1. Comb Your Hair In The Shower

Ensure your strands are getting the right amount of moisture by conditioning the ends only, not your scalp. Then run a comb or brush through your hair while still in the shower to ensure the condition is applied evenly.

2. Powder Your Roots

Yep, you can use baby powder or even face powder applied with a big fluffy brush at your roots to soak up grease. It's another good reason to keep a compact in your bag!

3. Try Washing With Dish Soap

Sounds wild, but your average dish soap has oil fighting ingredients. It's made to combat grease and scum, so it's perfect for an oily scalp.

4. Skip Shampoo

Shampooing too often can strip your hair of its natural oils, causing it to overcompensate by producing even more sebum, or oil. Take a week or two to adjust your shampoo schedule, scaling it back to see it it helps.

5. Opt For Messy Hair

Touching your hair, using hot tools and constantly combing through your hair can increase oil production. Opt for a messy, beachy wave look and give the hot tools a rest for a few days.

6. Rinse Twice

When you do lather up with the shampoo, wash once and rise twice. Rinsing an extra time will help reduce product build up, which can cause a greasy looking scalp.

7. Don't Overuse Dry Shampoo

Soaking up your grease with a daily dose of dry shampoo may be a bad idea. The product can actually dry out your scalp, causing it to produce even more oil. If you're extra greasy, skip the dry shampoo for a few days.
