Cersei's 'GoT' Season 6 Plans Are Intense

by Caroline Gerdes

The Season 5 finale of HBO's Game of Thrones was a lot to take in — Arya went blind, Jon Snow died (I’m still not buying it), Daenerys was swarmed, and Cersei underwent that hard-to-watch, visceral scene where she was stripped naked and forced on a shame walk by the Faith. As for what happened to those characters after, no one really knows; fans don’t have the books to spill the beans, as several of those TV cliffhangers caught up with the characters' plots in the Song of Ice and Fire series. like Cersei’s story. As of now, what will happen to Cersei in Season 6 of GoT is still a total mystery.

Well, almost. In a recent HBO trailer teasing upcoming seasons of their shows, what some viewers have purported to be a softer Cersei — short hair, post-penance walk — is seen kissing her son King Tommen on the head. This isn’t out of character for Cersei, who has always placed her children as a top priority (I mean, Joffrey was the embodiment of the phrase "only a mother could love)" but it raises questions about her role in the upcoming season. No one knows what will happen, and fans are grasping at straws with a barely two-second clip trying to figure out her fate. So, based on that clip and other clues, here are some things Cersei may be up to next season.

Hanging With The Mountain

In October, Photos surfaced of Lena Headey (who plays Cersei) dressed in full costume with short hair filming on a beach in Croatia — AKA King’s Landing. During the filming, Headey was accompanied by Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson (The Mountain). According to ibtimes.com, Season 6 will see the Mountain having taken a vow of silence until all of the queen’s enemies are dead.

Mourning Myrcella

Some have wondered if Cersei’s tender embrace with Tommen is born from the fact that in Season 6, Cersei is left with only one living child. A big Season 5 cliffhanger was Myrcella likely dying after coming into contact with Dornish poison. But is she really dead? This entire princess rescue attempt plays out differently in the book series, where she is alive, albeit disfigured. That's no surprise, as the HBO series has killed off other superfluous characters who survived in the book, like Talisa Stark.

Setting Out For Revenge

In a post-Season 5 interview with The Wall Street Journal, Headey said that Cersei is in a state of “pure vengeance.” Said the actor:

“I don’t think she’s incredibly happy. I don’t think she likes very many people, even less than before, if that’s even possible. She’s made more enemies … I think she’s in a state of pure vengeance, but I don’t think it’s going to be straightforward because it’s her. It is exciting. If I don’t die.”

No one is safe, and no one knows who is safe — not even Headey. The actress also spoke with Entertainment Weekly about Cersei’s predicament, saying that at this point she doesn’t know what is in store for the character, but that she thinks that “she’s got some people to kill before she’s done.”

Joining A Drama Troupe

Well, sort of. Vanity Fair reports that Season 6 will feature a drama troupe that puts on a show called “The Bloody Hand” about the series' happenings and The Babadook's Essie Davis will portray the actress portraying Cersei. So meta.

A lot is in store for Cersei this season, so it's a good thing we only have a few more months of waiting left.
