The Best Way To Clean A Beauty Blender

by Sienna Fantozzi

You may not think about cleaning your makeup brushes and sponges on the regs, but if you want to prevent breakouts, it's absolutely something you need to make the time for. If you aren't entirely sure how to clean your beauty blender sponge, though, you're definitely not alone, and I'm going to teach you how. And there's even a couple different options you have for how to do it!

Beauty blenders are amazing for putting on foundation, but makeup can build up on the sponge, and any bacteria or dirt on your face can cling to it when you apply it, which is kind of gross. If that's going to be touching your face every day, you probably want to make sure you're cleaning it to help prevent breakouts. Unfortunately, it's not as easy as just "rinse and wring out," and you do have to use a special product beyond just water to make sure it's clean. I know, the extra effort sucks, but a pimple-free face makes it totally worth it. Trust.

Though beauty blender sells a cleanser on their website, there's also a DIY option if you don't want to spend the extra money on cleaning solution. Whichever way you choose to go, here's the best ways to properly clean your beauty blender sponge.

The Official Cleanser

Liquid Blendercleanser, $18, Amazon

Beautyblender sells a cleanser on their website, one that is specially formulated so it won't ruin the sponge. If you've purchased that, then all you need to do is pour four tablespoons of your cleanser in a bowl and submerge the sponge in it under cold water. Then squeeze it and work it into a lather, but avoid twisting or pinching so it won't tear. Finally, rinse it with cold water and let it sit in a well-ventilated area to dry.

The DIY Solution

Puracy Natural Liquid Dish Soap, $18, Amazon

If you don't want to spend the money for a cleanser, you can DIY a solution made with gentle dish soap and water, or baby shampoo shampoo and water. Avoid bar soap, bleach, or any cleaning agents. Once you've made your own cleanser, follow the same cleaning steps above, but sub in your cleanser.

On-The-Go Cleaning

Blendercleanser Solid, $16, Amazon

If you've got a spot stain, or are using your beauty blender on the go, the company sells a solid soap that will remove heavily pigmented, stained areas. Just swirl your sponge onto the soap to work into a lather, press to allow the product to sink in, then rinse and lay out to dry.
