Celebrate The 'MADtv' Anniversary With 11 Classics

by Caroline Gerdes

Miss Swan? Bon Qui Qui? Coach Hines? If these names ring a bell, then you are probably a MADtv fan. If that's the case, you’re in luck, because The CW is airing a one-hour 20th anniversary reunion special on Tuesday, Jan. 12, six years after its last new episode. But, will our favorite Mad TV characters from our favorite sketches be joining us?

The CW reunion program promises a salute to the comedy series that ran for 14 seasons on Fox — basically, millennial childhoods — from 1995 to 2009. The series introduced us to many comedic actors like Keegan-Michael Key, Jordan Peele (yes, both halves of Key and Peele), Ike Barinholtz, Alex Borstein, Stephanie Weir, Mo Collins, Michael McDonald, Nicole Sullivan, and more.

As a sketch comedy program that aired on Saturday nights, the show was often eclipsed by Saturday Night Live. Though characters like Stuart became cult classics and breakout favorites, the series was also known for its capacity to go places other sketch shows wouldn’t. It roasted popular TV shows, played the gross-out card, and faced stereotypes head-on. MADtv was not afraid to be offensive and it was a force to be reckoned with.

So, before the big CW special on Tuesday night, let’s take a look back at 11 of the most unforgettable MADtv sketches and characters.

1. Stuart

When I was a kid, going to school on Monday after a Stuart skit meant facing a lot of "look what I can do" and "talk into the microphone" impressions. Though Stuart went through a lot on the series — getting lost, going to school, visiting the doctor, and more — this babysitter skit is classic Stuart with a home-court advantage.

2. Can I Have Your Number?

Sigh, as women we have all been here. You are just trying to enjoy a movie, or dinner, or a stroll alone and alas this guy shows up.

3. The iPad

This skit predated the actual device, but cleverly parodied society's tech obsession, which has only grown since the series ended.

4. Coach Hines

It's Key! Coach Hines was a MADtv fan favorite, because we all had a Coach Hines IRL.

5. Miss Swan

She confused the people around her, but Borstein's most famous character seemed to know what she was doing.

6. Bon Qui Qui

Rude.

7. Friends — Sort Of

MADtv was known for blasting popular sitcoms, like in this memorable bit about Friends' lack of diversity.

8. Randy Newman

His songs were a part of so many '90s soundtracks and MADtv perfectly parodied his distinct sound. Also, Star Wars.

9. East Side Locos

A gang member dedicated to his art.

10. Dot Goddard

Dot was the dim-bulbed, hyper-active, home-schooled 7-year-old who quickly became a MADtv staple.

11. Miss Sylvia Debra Wilson

So much for confidentiality.

Fingers crossed that the MADtv reunion will let some of these characters grace our screens one more time.
