'Straight Outta Compton' Is Feeling The Oscar Love

Now that the 2016 Golden Globes are behind us, it's time for another major awards show — no, I'm not talking about the Razzies. On Thursday, the 2016 Oscar nominations were announced. Per usual, there were many deserving and expected nominations, among many surprises and snubs. I mean, when it comes to the Academy Awards that's bound to happen. Also, between critics, viewers, and fans, well, they all usually differ on who is most deserving of an Oscar nom and win. Well, for those who were hoping a certain 2015 F. Gary Gray film would be recognized, it was! The 2016 Oscars nominated Straight Outta Compton for Best Original Screenplay.

I'm sure no was expecting Straight Outta Compton to get any Oscar love, but it did. That said, even though it isn't part of the Best Picture Oscar category, at least it got one Oscar nom. Will it win? Who knows, but being up against Bridge of Spies, Ex Machina, Inside Out, and Spotlight, it has some serious competition.

Straight Outta Compton continues to prove successful. It also received a 2016 SAG Award nomination in the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. The SAGs air Saturday, Jan. 30. at 8 p.m. ET on TBS and TNT. That is one awards show that truly matters, because the winners are chosen by actors' peers. That is huge, especially when respectable and talented stars are supporting one another.

Plus, during it's opening weekend, Straight Outta Compton debuted at No. 1 in the U.S. and Canada with $60.2 million and making it the "fifth-highest August opener ever," according to Deadline. The film's success doesn't stop there. In November 2015, it was reported the movie focusing on the hip-hop trailblazers N.W.A. crossed the $200 million mark at the worldwide box office. This is a major deal, because it was Universal Pictures' seven film to do so in 2015.

Straight Outta Compton continues to find success, even if in this case it only meant one Oscar nom.
