More Tragic News For Celine Dion's Family

by Lia Beck

More incredibly sad news for the Dion family. Only one day after her husband, René Angélil, died of cancer, it has been confirmed that Celine Dion's brother is also battling cancer, and it sounds like he might not have long left to live. The singer's rep confirmed to Entertainment Tonight on Friday that Daniel Dion is fighting throat, tongue, and brain cancer. Angélil died of throat cancer.

The "Because You Loved Me" performer's sister, Claudette Dion, recently gave an interview to The Journal of Montreal, published on Friday, in which she explained Daniel's situation. "It's very painful... It's a matter of days or hours," Claudette said. She went onto explain that her and her sibling's mother had been with the family visiting Daniel in the hospital: "Mom arrived very quickly in Montreal. She is 89 years old and she is very strong. It is surrounded, the whole family together. We are with Daniel, day and night ... He is 59 years old, very young to be the end of life."

On Thursday, Jan. 14, Angélil died at age 73 after a long, public battle with cancer. His rep confirmed the news to People with the following statement:

Rene Angélil, 73, passed away this morning at his home in Las Vegas after a long and courageous battle against cancer. The family requests that their privacy be respected at the moment.
