Steven Avery's Son Spoke Out Back In 2009 — VIDEO

The name "Avery" has circulated the nation in recent weeks, after the Netflix documentary series Making a Murderer captivated viewers' attention. Following the trial of Steven Avery, who's currently serving life in prison for the 2005 murder of Teresa Halbach, the documentary series talks about his family, but doesn't interview his children or mention where they are today. But in a video from 2009, Bill Avery, one of Steven's sons, talked to Fox 11 News about living with the Avery name in the small Wisconsin town where the family is from.

The Netflix series explains that Steven and his ex-wife had five children. Bill and his twin brother Steve were only 10 days old when their father went to prison in 1985 — Steven was convicted for sexual assaulting a woman, but exonerated 18 years later by new DNA evidence — and both twins served in the army when Steven was convicted for the murder of Halbach in 2007. They grew up with limited contact with their father, and Bill said in the interview that this hadn't changed.

Having the last name "Avery" in Manitowoc County was difficult, thanks to the high-profile cases around Steven, according to Bill. "If we go buy a pack of smokes and they card us, they would see it and see our name and be like 'Oh, so you're an Avery?,'" he told Fox 11. "It happens quite often, actually."

Bill, who looks incredibly similar to Steven, had a hard time dealing with the backlash, and it affected his life in myriad ways. "It's extremely hard now to get a job without being ridiculed," he said at the time. Bill said that his brother and he were continuously asked whether they think their father killed Halbach. He was convinced that his father had been telling the truth for all those years he claimed his innocence. "He could have did it, but I don't think he did," he told Fox 11. "I think he was just more or less framed from somebody."
